As part of FAB10: FabLab UP Cebu’s 10th Anniversary, we invite designers, researchers, educators, practitioners, and students to submit abstracts for DESIGN NEXT: Innovation and Design Futures Conference (DESNXT 2026), happening on November 20–21, 2026, at the University of the Philippines Cebu.

We welcome research and creative works exploring design, technology, culture, community development, sustainability, and emerging futures. Share your ideas, research, and projects with a community of people shaping the future of design!

𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗢 𝗦𝗟𝗘𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗦 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗣: 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝘃𝗲𝘀

The Textile Innovation Lab invites participants to explore one of the most recognizable elements of the Terno through a hands-on patterning workshop with 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗘𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮.

The session will focus on the construction and patterning of the iconic butterfly sleeves, giving participants the opportunity to understand how their distinctive form is developed from pattern to garment.

Drawing from Esplanada’s practice in fashion design and illustration, the workshop offers a closer look at the techniques behind a familiar Filipino silhouette and the possibilities of interpreting it through contemporary making.

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺: 𝗨𝗣 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻

The Benchmarking concluded with a visit to the Industrial Design Program of UP Diliman.

We explored and compared approaches to design education, curriculum, studio practice, and program development. The tour also gave us a closer look at their facilities and learning environment, offering valuable insights that we can reflect on within our own program.

An inspiring exchange of ideas, experiences, and possibilities - and another step toward continuously strengthening design education in UP Cebu.

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺: 𝗕𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗘 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻

Our UP Cebu Design Faculty visited the Benilde School of Art and Design, where we had the opportunity to engage with fellow educators in their Industrial Design program and learn more about their approach to design education.

The discussions & tour allowed us to compare perspectives on programs, curriculum development, studio practices, and the ways design schools prepare students for an ever-changing creative industry. A tour of their facilities and learning spaces further enriched the experience, giving us a closer look at the environment that supports their students and faculty.

No, we are equipped with fresh perspectives, renewed inspiration, and a deeper appreciation for the many ways design education can evolve.

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺: 𝗠𝗔𝗣𝗨𝗔 𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗕𝗘

The Design Faculty of UP Cebu visited the Mapúa University – Architecture, Industrial Design, and the Built Environment in Manila as part of our continuing efforts to learn from and strengthen design education.

The visit provided an opportunity to exchange insights on curriculum, studio-based learning, facilities, and the evolving needs of design education. Beyond benchmarking, the visit opened avenues for dialogue and potential collaboration.

A meaningful exchange that left us inspired to continue building better spaces and experiences for design education. Thank you, ARIDBE ❤️

The UP Cebu Design Program proudly celebrates Instructor Edwin Ao for showcasing his latest collection at BENCH Fashion Week Holiday 2026 in Makati City.

Entitled “Chlorophyll Hexagons: The Body in Impermanence,” the collection explores ideas of transformation, memory, experience, and time through sculptural forms, fractured imagery, fragmentation, layering, and recomposition.

The collection also features solar printing, using sunlight and chlorophyll as agents of imprint and change - transforming fabric into a record of exposure and evolution.

A celebration of design, craft, and creative expression from one of our own. Congratulations, Sir Edwin! ✨
