IN MEMORIAM
Edgar “Egai” Talusan Fernandez
(January 20, 1955- February 27, 2024)

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) expresses great sorrow on the passing of visual artist Edgar “Egai” Talusan Fernandez, who has been a frequent leader, partner and collaborator of the Commission as well as mentor to many artists and NCCA workers.

Fernandez has made his mark as a leading social realist painter in the Philippines, whose many works are compelling commentaries on socio-political issues of the times. Also having created abstract, reliefs, and sculptural works, he has mounted many exhibits here and abroad. He also has won many art competitions and been bestowed honors for his achievements including the Thirteen Artists Award of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1990 and the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan award from the city of Manila in 2006.

Fernandez has been active in many cultural organizations, serving on different occasions as a founding member of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines, president of the Art Association of the Philippines, president of the Christian Art Society of the Philippines, president of the Agos Kulay Watercolor Group, and vice president of the Filipino Visual Arts and Design Rights Organization.

At the NCCA, he served as head of the National Committee on Visual Art from 2007 to 2010 and 2017 to 2019, a curatorial consultant of the NCCA Gallery, and project director and consultant of the Arts in Public Spaces program.

The NCCA is grateful for his invaluable contributions to the agency as well as for his legacy of artistry and activism to the country.
