NAW Entry No. 05:
ARCHITECTURE IN A WORLD FULL OF BOUNDARIES

"Solo House III: Sunken Pyramids"

The resort dwelling's plan is to bring cutting-edge architecture to a rural setting. TNA has used a classic form-the pyramid-and cleverly inverted it to create a sense of weightlessness.

Large cutouts in the upper dwelling provide panoramic views over the landscape and the sleek interior is divided by mezzanines of different levels, which keep the open feeling of the pyramid, but clearly define living spaces.

The project designers is confined by the location, the laws of physics and the innate creativity. Consequently, TNA went to the drawing boards and emerged with an inverted pyramid concept that looks straight out of a futuristic arcade.

NAW Entry No. 04:
ARCHITECTURE BLENDS WITH NATURE

"Solo House II: Tuscany of Mediterranean Landscape”

Solo House is a contemporary home offering a 360 degree view of the surrounding trees and sea views. The house is situated in Matarraña, south of Barcelona, Spain.

By employing glass and a mobile metal mesh panel as the primary materials for the exterior walls, the architects have established a non-obtrusive option for shade and privacy.

By utilizing environmentally friendly features and inviting artistic input, OFFICE have established a space of coexistence between natural and manmade form, creating a work of architecture in conversation with the surrounding environment.

The Solo House is a country residence in a large untouched forest, in the mountainous region of Matarraña, two hours south of Barcelona. The house frames the top of a plateau, overlooking the surrounding forests and dramatical landscape.

Since the scenery is so impressive, we felt architecture should be invisible, merely emphasizing the natural qualities of the surroundings. A simple circular roof with a diameter of 45 meters underlines the qualities of both the plateau and its edge.

NAW ENTRY NO. 03:
ARCHITECTURE MEETS ENGINEERING

"Solo House I: Truth Always Appears as Something Veiled"

The structure took inspiration in this early example of Eastern labyrinths provides a circular route that leads all the way to the center and then back, without any other options or shortcuts, which contain paths that branch out thus providing options to the walker.

The architect utilizes locally produced perforated bricks in his circular sculptural installation of perforated bricks. These semi-translucent walls generate a visual permeability which comprises walls that entirely obstruct the visitor’s vision, calling for walkers to cross them in search of the center.

With the aim of confronting art with architecture, engineering and landscape, the work transforms the rolling green landscape into an imaginary country.

Héctor Zamora creates ‘truth always appears as something veiled’ as part of the solo houses ‘summer group show.’ The work is influenced by and expressive of the ancient knidos labyrinth, a radial maze carved in a block of black marble.

The project generates a single circular route which leads toward its center and returns with no alternate options or shortcuts — in opposition to those western types which create an intricate network.

The layering, perforated brick walls partially obstruct the view both inward and outward, offering a new perception between the hidden and the open.
