Today, July 24 marks the feast of this quiet hermit from the mountains of Lebanon — a humble Maronite monk whose hidden life of prayer continues to touch the whole world.
Born Youssef Antoun Makhlouf in 1828 in the high village of Bekaa Kafra, he entered the monastery as a young man, took the name Charbel, and was ordained a priest. For 23 years he lived as a hermit in complete silence, poverty, and devotion, spending long hours before the Blessed Sacrament and invoking the Blessed Virgin day and night. He often said, “Pray without ceasing.”
He died on Christmas Eve 1898 while still united to the Eucharist. After his death, a mysterious light shone from his tomb. His body was found incorrupt, and countless healings — physical and spiritual — began to be reported. Pope Paul VI canonized him in 1977, calling him an “admirable flower of sanctity” from the ancient monastic tradition of the East.
St. Charbel is known as the “Miracle Monk of Lebanon.” People from every nation and background still turn to him for healing, conversion, and peace. His intercession shows that a life hidden with God can become a powerful light for the entire Church.
Today, let us ask this great saint to pray for us:
St. Charbel, silent lover of the Eucharist and the Mother of God,
obtain for us the grace of deeper prayer, healing of body and soul,
and the courage to live simply for Jesus alone.
Amen.
