Built-in benches, a skylight, and a zen garden.

For a space that was once utilized as a laundry area, we saw potential for a bright lanai and garden that would grow with the needs of the users. The client, being an avid book lover, envisioned a space where she could spend her afternoons reading in solitude. We're transforming this garden from what was once a neglected space, into what we Filipinos call "maaliwalas".

A New Prototype for Public Space in The Philippines

In the Philippines today, there is an urgent need for decent public spaces. The exhibition we designed samples a new way of resolving the crisis through people-centered outdoor spaces with a cafe, an open library, and urban farming technologies. An amphitheater promotes culture, and a bamboo forest promotes contemplative meditation in the city. A green jogging path connects all of the spaces creating a sense of anticipation as exhibit-goers go from start to end.

The sunlit roof features colorful panels called AuREUS, an award-winning technology by Filipino inventor Carvey Ehren Maigue. These panels absorb stray UV light from sunlight and converts it to clean renewable electricity. Made from fruit and vegetable waste, these panels are fixed to a geometric frame reminiscent of indigenous weave patterns of the Philippines.

A gentle yet powerful curve. A simple gesture to represent our country, its ideals and its aspirations.

We thought of adding a wading pond to invite visitors to cool down as their feet are immersed in water. In the colder seasons, it doubles as a reflecting pond, further emphasizing the dramatic curves of the structure. This vast and open plaza represents the Filipino hospitality, translated in architecture by the lack of walls at the ground floor. Visitors can simply walk thru to the bay of Busan beyond.

The ceilings of reclaimed wood curve into benches, completing the monastic public space.

For our proposal of the Philippine Pavilion, the form was conceptualized around the "Dulong", the Filipino word used to describe the bow or front portion of a ship's hull.

The entire exposition space is thrust upward, supported by two giant super columns shaped like two ship hulls, each representing the rich maritime history of both Busan, South Korea and The Philippines respectively, merging together to form a massive cantilevered canopy for exhibition-goers. the ground floor was kept as an open plaza suited for welcoming visitors, not unlike the warmth and hospitality Filipinos are known for. Furthermore, the entire structure is clad in reclaimed wood, to give a sense of warmth to the large covered public space.

Dulong: The Philippine Pavilion for Expo 2030

As the continues to attract visitors in Osaka Japan, we look back at our proposed entry for the Philippine Pavilion in Bcome 2022, an international design competition on national pavilion proposals for Expo 2030 in Busan, South Korea with the theme: Transforming Our World, Navigating toward a Better Future.

Dulong is a Filipino term used to describe the “bow” or front hull of a boat or ship, fronting a ship’s journey. This concept is used to denote the rich and similar maritime history that exists between the City of Busan and the Philippines.

The entire exposition space is thrust upward, supported by two giant super columns shaped like two ship hulls, each representing the rich maritime history of both Busan, South Korea and The Philippines respectively, merging together to form a massive cantilevered canopy for exhibition-goers. As architects, we embraced the challenge of building this new resort complex in a community with limited material-availability. A such, the final product is a result of meticulous research and simplifying aesthetics to create structures dominated by various tactile concrete finishes. Roof planes bare the same wood finish, creating a juxtaposition from the gray concrete, and unifying the structures visually.

These elements ties-in with the clients' request to have an industrial-type Loft resort that serves their local community, The Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija.

We provide contemporary architectural, interiors and planning services.
