Origins of Silog

Silog is a popular Filipino breakfast dish that consists of sinangag (garlic fried rice) and itlog (fried egg), paired with a protein, often a cured meat or fried dish. The name of each variation comes from the main protein—such as Tapsilog (Tapa + Sinangag + Itlog) or Tocilog (Tocino + Sinangag + Itlog).

In a small barrio, an old woman named Aling Rosa ran a tiny roadside stall. Known for her sweet treats, she had one specialty—halo-halo. But hers was different. No matter how many others tried to copy it, none could match the magic of her dessert.

One curious boy, Luis, decided to find out her secret. He watched as she carefully layered shaved ice, sweet beans, fruits, and jellies. She topped it with ube, leche flan, and ice cream before handing it to a customer, who smiled with delight.

Finally, Luis gathered the courage to ask, “Lola, why is your halo-halo the best?”

Aling Rosa chuckled and leaned in. “The secret, apo, isn’t just in the ingredients. It’s in the joy of making it and the love you mix into every bowl.”

Luis smiled, realizing that halo-halo wasn’t just a dessert—it was a reminder that the best things in life are made with love.
