“The only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah.” Luke 11:29

The sign of Jonah is a call to repent. In verse 32 of the same chapter, we can read what Jesus said to the “evil generation” listening to Him, “At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

Such an understatement! Jesus is much greater than Jonah, much greater than all the prophets combined! His grace-filled Words fill the Gospels, and the Old Testament all point to Him! When two young Muslim girls read Jesus’ words, they converted to Christianity, and put 20,000 Bibles in mailboxes in Iran. They started two house churches, and spread the good news.

In 2009, Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh were arrested and put in the notoriously brutal Evin Prison in Iran. At first, they were terrified, and prayed that they would be released. But as it became clear they had a purpose being there, they became a sign of Jonah to the inmates, the prostitutes, and a sign of hope for the desperate. Even though it was dangerous to speak loudly, they would sing in tongues, and the Moslems around would feel the presence of God. Many would cry, confess their sins and turn back to God.

After 259 days, they were both released. Many Christians, the UN, even the Pope wrote letters to the Iranian government. Now they are free, they wrote their story in a book, “Captive in Iran”, and vow to be a voice for those who are still in prison. There are hundreds of thousands of Christians in Iran, and the numbers of Iranian refugees converting have grown tremendously over the years, even if they face persecution, and even death.

Lord, there is so much evil in the world. Like Maryam and Marziyeh, may we be a sign of Jonah where we are. But more importantly, may we sit at Your feet every day. Soften our hearts that we may receive You who are the source of all good things.

"The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want." Psalm 23:1

The Lord is my shepherd. He leads me where there is everything I need, peaceful water, and green meadows. He protects me from my enemies.

The Lord is my gardener (1 Cor. 3:9). He takes care that I am fruitful, that I will bloom in due season. He prunes away the dead leaves and broken branches. He makes sure I am healthy.

The Lord is my friend (John 15:15). Everything He learned from our Father He has made known to us. He has taught us what we need to know. Even the hard things. We are not His servants He said, because if He was, He would not have confided in us! Imagine the privilege we have as His friend!

But the Lord can only be our shepherd and gardener and friend if we continue to be intimate with Him. If we have a relationship with Him. Otherwise, He will just be a stranger knocking at the door (Rev. 3:20). "If you hear me calling and open the door, I will come in, and will share a meal as friends."

Lord, what a friend I have in You! There is no one like You! How humble You are that You do not barge Your way into my life! You wait until I invite You in! Lord, shine Your light into every corner of my home, especially the dark places! Be my Shepherd, be my Gardener, be my friend! Without You, I am wretched and blind and pitiable!

“With many parables, He spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it.” Mark 4:33

I have heard so many homilies, sermons, and preaching, in my life. I have to confess a lot of times most of it goes in one ear and out the next. Sometimes it doesn’t and I’ve noticed that when a priest or preacher tells a story, that is when my attention is caught and I am even able to remember it and share it with others.

Jesus was a story teller. He told lots of parables, and gave us word pictures. Like he said the Kingdom of God is like the tiny tiny mustard seed, but once it is planted in the ground, it becomes the largest of plants and the branches become so large the birds can dwell in its shade. My grandchild is only three years old. He is like a little whirlwind who does not stop moving. But there is one thing that will keep him still and that is if he is told a story. I delight in his expressive face when I tell him stories because he is so interested and asks a lot of questions. The last time he asked me a question, I did not quite know the answer and I had to search on Google and read him the answer. He memorized it word for word! He even told his Nana Peggy and my sister was so amazed, she asked him where he learned it. He answered, “Google search!”

Today, there really is no reason to say we cannot understand the Bible. When we read, we can ask God to help us, but if we are at a dead end, there are so many resources available to us on the internet. I delight in reading about archaeological finds that prove the Bible stories, apologetics, customs during Jesus’ time to make the narrative come alive. And if I do not remember 9/10 of what I read, that is fine. I believe that God’s seeds of His faithfulness are planted in my heart and He is the gardener. My joy is one of the fruits.

“About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God as the prisoners listened, there was suddenly such a severe earthquake that the foundations of the jail shook..." Acts 16:25-26

During his ministry, Saint Paul spent more than 5 years in prison. Like him, we should learn to praise and thank God wherever we are, in whatever circumstance. Praise and thanksgiving changes our minds, our attitudes, even changes circumstances! Like shouts of praise brought down the walls of Jericho, thanksgiving can dismantle strongholds and causes chains to be broken.

I remember when the management in a mall where we had a store, were determined to get us out because we did not have high sales like the other brand name shops they preferred. But it was one of our best stores, and it would be very bad for our bottom line if we lost our space! So I walked around the store 7 or more times and praised God! Well, we still have our space, and in a better location than before!!!

I think about David and why God loved him so much even if he sinned many times. Perhaps it is because he had a wonderful relationship with His Father! God called David "a man after my own heart", and David composed many wonderful songs. He danced for God, even if people thought he was crazy!

Knowing God should lead us to praise and worship. Otherwise we would be just like the devil. The devil knows God and knows with conviction who Jesus is, even more than we do, BUT chooses not to worship God.

Let our knowledge about who God is to us travel from our mind down to our heart. Let us give Him the praise He deserves!!!

Thus says the Lord: “Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, Giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; It shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:10-11

In 2011, I was hospitalized for Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism. My legs were swollen and painful even if I put them up. I underwent a procedure which entailed putting a filter for blood clots. At that time my doctor said I would need to wear thick, tight, compression stockings for the rest of my life (that did wonders for my wardrobe!!!!). She also said I would need to take rat poison forever, to thin my blood and prevent any more blood clots. What I did was go to the Word of God and compile verses about God's promise to heal.

Proverbs 4:20-22 says: "Attend to My Words, Do not let them out of your sight. Keep them within your heart, for they are life to those that find them, healing and health to all their flesh." God's Word is medicine! With no overdose! Proverbs 12:18 says, "The tongue of the wise promotes health", so I would confess "By His stripes I am healed,"(Is. 53:5) and "You will restore health unto me and heal me of my wounds." (Jer. 30:17) I confessed God's Word every day or listened to the confessions on Youtube or from a CD.

God keeps His promises! Just as it is impossible for rain to fall without accomplishing something, God's Word brought forth healing as He said it would. In 2015, my toes turned blue and I did not need the tight stockings anymore. At that time, I still continued to confess healing scriptures for my Pemphigus Vulgaris, which is a rare autoimmune disorder that caused many wounds and blisters in my mouth all at the same time. I could not eat, I could not talk when these eruptions would occur which was often. I got so thin and I used to take steroids which would make my face puff up. This painful condition healed abruptly as well and I have not taken steroids for years although PV is not exactly healable.

I continue to confess God’s Word for I now need healing for pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is a condition where blood vessels in my lungs are narrow and blood flow is slow. I am confident this will disappear in God’s good time.

Whatever challenge we face, let us believe and declare, “Nothing shall be impossible to us who believe!" (Matthew 17:2)
