Paraluman Giftshop was a dream come true. In a journal entry from 2020, I sketched out a floor plan for my dream shop: flowers at the front, beautifully design objects in the middle, and a cafe in the back. As a constant dreamer, this idea got buried under shinier things: checking off the list of big brands I want to work with, magazine features, amongst other things that don’t shine as much for me anymore (still grateful for them though!!). Add to that is my distaste for consumerism and the false belief that focusing on selling means being an active contributor to capitalism. Jokes on me, we can’t escape this system, but we can navigate it more intentionally!
When I finally allowed myself to challenge my own unproductive thoughts, I was able to create a space where flowers, amongst a long list of beautiful art and objects lived for three days. Where each team member was having fun connecting with guests, where people were happy to see flora, and where we were able to showcase all the brands and artists we lovingly invited to take part.
It turns out, it was never really about selling, as all my favorite moments had nothing to do with profiting. It was really about the small moments of connection with folks, reminding us that this is our home and that we belong here. That if you lean in to what feels uncomfortable, it might just take you where you need to be. And that if you do things with care, s**t will always work out!!!
