Gal at Home

Gal at Home We help moms and families create homes they love—wherever they are in the world—through intentional, professional design that removes overwhelm and brings peace, order, and beauty back into their lives.

We help working moms and condo dwellers go from feeling confused, overwhelmed, and struggling to fix their spaces to having confidence on how they can create homes they love and enjoy living in.

DISCLAIMER: THESE ARE ROUGH ESTIMATES ONLY, BASED ON HISTORICAL DATA FROM OUR PAST PROJECTS. ACTUAL COSTS DEPEND ON YOUR PROJECT'S LOCATION, TIMING, INFLATION RATES, YOUR CHOICE OF CONTRACTORS, AND YOUR PREFERRED BRANDS AND MATERIALS. THESE FIGURES ALSO DO NOT INCLUDE THE PROFESSIONAL FEES OF ANYONE YOU HIRE FOR YOUR PROJECT, WHETHER THAT IS YOUR INTERIOR DESIGNER, ARCHITECT, PROJECT MANAGER, OR ENGINEER.

How much does it really cost to fix up your home? It is the question I hear on almost every discovery call, so I finally put the numbers down in one place. Here are 3 budget tiers, what each one actually covers, and the hidden costs that catch first-time renovators off guard.

I broke the whole thing down on the blog. Link is in the comments. 💛

In today's episode of "Where's the Lie" 👀🙊🙈🙉

While I have been found to randomly stop in my tracks to respond to an emergency text from an engineer or architect or even a client frantically needing my input about something at the job site...I have thankfully been blessed with amazing people who have never made me want to go back to the employed life ever again. It’s taken years and a lot of terrible mistakes for me to find the right crew to work with. Sure, no one's perfect, and there still are days when I want to tear my hair out. But just the fact that I know the people I work with are people who have our clients' best interests at heart, who want the projects we work on to succeed as much as the people who will be living in them---that says a LOT.

Thanks to my good friend for shooting and directing me in my debut drama film 😆

I've been going to for years, for my own home and for clients, so I thought I knew exactly what to expect when I walked into the Makati flagship reopening yesterday.

I did not.

The whole store has been reimagined, and whoever did the merchandise styling deserves a full round of applause 🙌🏽👏👏👏 because the color coordination across every section was so intentional, so gradient and considered, that it stopped feeling like a department store and started feeling like walking through someone's home where everything just happened to be for sale. That is genuinely hard to pull off at this scale!

And the PLATEWARE 😍😍😍 I could have spent hours just in that section! So many beautiful, well-designed pieces at prices that remind you why SM has always been the great equalizer of home styling in this country.

This is the SM Home I didn't know I was waiting for.

Pretty rare for us to get a client directive that comes straight out of one of my favorite literary works. No, let me correct that: We've never received a client directive like this in the entire 11-year history of Gal at Home.

So, yes, I was STOKED. And yes, I totally enjoyed creating this with my team and presenting this to our client's entire family. It was quite unique in that we didn't want it to look too themed; we still needed to put a contemporary twist on it. And of course, we needed to consider every family member's preferences and needs, including those of the extended family.

These are just our initial drafts; we still have to revise quite a few elements (as always happens when we first present our designs to clients). But what was supposed to be a two-hour presentation turned into a five-hour discussion about their lives, their loves, their favorites. And it was so fun to get to know them intimately, which I know would definitely help us improve on these designs even more.

Talk about a dream design project!

11 years of Gal at Home today! 🥳🎉🥂

And if there's one thing a decade-plus of helping people design their homes has taught me, it's that the space is almost never the real problem.

I've posted about the "home trifecta" concept on this page several times before, but never enough for the concept to stick. I just wasn't practicing what I was [inconsistently] preaching.

I was running a design studio, helping other people "create homes they loved", while ignoring two-thirds of my own trifecta. I was tending to the space and leaving myself and my relationships on the back burner. And my home felt like it, bore the brunt of my inaction.

I would love to say that redesigning my home made things better, but it didn't. It was mindset work, relationship work, spirituality, money manifestation, even therapy that made me learn how to actually receive the life I kept saying I wanted. Slowly, the home followed. I didn’t have to buy new things to make my house FEEL like home, but because I finally knew who I was designing it for.

That's what this page is becoming. Still design, always design. But also the stuff that has to happen first, or alongside, or sometimes instead. The inner work that makes the outer work actually stick.

If that sounds like your kind of rabbit hole, stick around. Things are changing around here, and we'll be including more of the trifecta in the conversation! 😚

A little reintroduction feels overdue, so here we go.

I'm Camyl Besinga, and I'm the founder of Gal at Home Design Studio, which is turning 11 years old at the end of this month! (That fact alone is both thrilling and mildly terrifying, tbh.)

I started this as a one-woman operation with a blog and a very specific vision of what helpful design content could look like, and it has since grown into a remote team of architects, designers, and support staff working with clients across the Philippines and in countries as far as the US, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, Singapore, and the UAE. We've won two LUXlife awards for online interior design services and client service excellence, and I've somehow also found time to publish a romance novella in between client projects plus a brief stint in book publishing in the UK.

Before all of this, I spent years in the magazine and print world, including time as an editor at Cosmopolitan Philippines, where I styled shoots, wrote about homes, and slowly realized that interior design was where I actually wanted to be. I went back to school, got my certificate from the New York Institute of Art and Design, and haven't looked back since.

I've obviously been stretching the limits of what could be possible for me, and I'm not slowing down anytime soon. What I have been unexpectedly absorbed by lately is astrology. I mean the actual birth chart, with all its placements and layers and frankly uncanny accuracy, not the horoscope-in-the-back-of-a-magazine kind I'd been skimming since I was in my teens.

I found out I'm not just a Pisces Sun, but also a Leo Rising, a Virgo Moon, and an Aries Venus, and reading about each of those placements has been one of the more clarifying experiences of my recent life.

It explains my emotional responses, my communication style, the way I show up for people, and, fascinatingly, my design preferences. And I'm thinking, this way of understanding oneself is too good to keep to myself, so I've written about it on the blog, in case you're interested in getting to know a bit more about yourself too.

If you've ever walked into a space and felt immediately at home without being able to say why, or struggled to tell a designer what you actually want, I think your birth chart might have more answers than you'd expect. Read all about it through the link in the comments!

If you've been feeling like your space needs something new, this might be worth sitting with first.

Pulling this one out of the archives because it's still one of the most practical things we've ever published on the blog. (It's one of our most popular posts too!)

This was a studio refresh we did for a friend years ago, working entirely with what he already owned. We kept the furniture, rearranged it slightly to create defined zones, and then layered in a few things from there: a plant cutting in a tall vase, some metallic objects to bounce light around the dark wood, a chevron throw pillow to add pattern, and his own vintage aqua electric fan as the conversation piece that pulled the whole color story together.

The whole approach came down to taking stock of what was already in the space before adding anything, which is the same thing we still tell every client today regardless of budget or project size.

If you have a studio or a small bedroom that feels like it's not quite working, the full post walks through each step with photos. Link in comments.
