BAGUIO ARTIST CRAFTED THE BIGGEEST CROCHETED MANDALA
Adelaida Guia, a 55-year-old artist and proud Baguio resident, has captured the attention of locals and tourists alike with her ongoing creation: a giant crocheted mandala spanning an astonishing 223 inches (18.6 feet) in diameter.
Guia, originally from Lucban, Quezon, began crocheting at a young age, learning the skill from her mother. Now based in Baguio with her husband and five children, she channels decades of experience into what could soon become a historic feat. Her massive mandala,,,affectionately named “The Wishing Star” ,,,is a testament to passion, patience, and perseverance.
What sets Guia’s project apart is not just its size, but the fact that it’s being created entirely by one person. While similar projects have entered the Guinness World Records, most were team efforts. Guia, however, is aiming to set a new benchmark: the largest crocheted mandala completed by a single individual.
Working under the sun in full public view, Guia uses recycled yarns and vibrant threads to craft intricate patterns based on the “Mandala Madness” design by renowned crochet artist Helen Shrimpton. Her artistic process has become a live attraction, inspiring onlookers and garnering widespread admiration on social media.
Beyond the artistry, the Guinness World Record attempt requires an $800 registration fee,,,a cost Guia is trying to raise with help from her community. Despite the financial challenge, she remains undeterred, believing her work can help put Baguio’s creative spirit on the global stage.
“This is not just for me,” she shared in a recent interview. “This is for Baguio, for all local artists, and for the dreamers who start small but dream big.”
Her journey also aligns with Baguio City’s recognition as a UNESCO Creative City for crafts and folk art, a title earned in 2017. Guia hopes her record-breaking mandala can serve as both a personal milestone and a cultural emblem for the city.
As the colorful threads continue to spiral outward, Adelaida Guia’s story is proving that with determination, community, and creativity, even the most ambitious dreams can be stitched into reality.
