Ox Blood Costus (Costus erythrophyllus), often marketed as Costus erythrophyllus 'Rubra' or 'Oxblood Ginger,' is a striking tropical perennial appreciated for its dramatic foliage and compact size. Unlike taller ginger species, this variety is ideal for shady spots and containers.
Foliage: The plant features lush, broad, dark green leaves on top with deep velvet-maroon or "oxblood" red undersides. The leaves spiral up the stem, giving it the "Spiral Ginger" name.
Flowers: Produces cone-shaped, bright red bracts that hold small, pale pink or white flowers.
Size: Compact and clumping, typically growing only 1–2 feet tall, making it perfect for smaller, shaded spaces or as a container specimen.
Growth Habit: Prefers shaded or partial-shade environments.
Proper Care
Light: Thrives in partial shade to full shade. Direct, intense sunlight can fade the leaf color and scorch the leaves.
Water: Prefers consistently moist soil. Water regularly and do not allow the soil to completely dry out, but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
Soil: Thrives in rich, well-draining, and slightly acidic to neutral soil. A mix of potting soil, peat, and perlite works well.
Humidity/Temperature: High humidity is beneficial. It is tropical and sensitive to cold, needing protection or to be brought indoors in freezing temperatures.
Propagation: Can be propagated by dividing the rhizomes during the growing season.
Maintenance: Occasional misting helps in low-humidity environments, and it is a relatively low-maintenance plant.
