Indeed, the light emitted from gadgets (smartphones, tablets, computers) can have negative effects on your eyes.
Blue light from screens is a significant contributor to Digital Eye Strain (also known as Computer Vision Syndrome) and sleep disruption.
1. What are the Effects?
Digital Eye Strain (Computer Vision Syndrome): The most common effect, iscausing tired, sore, or itchy eyes, headaches, and blurred vision.
Dry Eyes: Due to reduced blinking while staring at screens, the eyes become dry and irritated.
Sleep Disruption: Blue light exposure at night inhibits the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, leading to difficulty falling asleep.
Difficulty Focusing: Eye muscles may feel strained when constantly adjusting between near screen viewing and further distances.
2. Why Does This Happen?
High-Energy Blue Light: Gadgets use LED technology, which emits a significant amount of "blue light." This light has a short wavelength and high energy, allowing it to pe*****te directly through the cornea and lens to reach the retina.
Reduced Blink Rate: People blink about one-third as often as they normally do when staring at screens, which causes the protective tear film on the eye to evaporate faster.
Proximity and Time: Holding devices very close to the face (e.g., smartphones) increases the intensity of the light, and long hours of continuous use prevent the eye muscles from resting.
Circadian Rhythm Disruption: The blue light tricks your brain into thinking it is still daytime, suppressing melatonin and lowering sleep quality.
3. How to Protect Your Eyes?
The 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away.
Adjust Device Settings: Use "Night Mode" or "Dark Mode" in the evening, which reduces blue light emissions and sets the screen to warmer, yellow tones.
Adjust Screen Brightness: Match your screen's brightness to the surrounding ambient light. A screen that is too bright in a dark room is harmful.
Keep Distance: Keep screens at least an arm's length (about 25 inches) away from your eyes.
Use Artificial Tears: If you suffer from dry eyes, lubricating eye drops can help keep your eyes moist.
Increase Font Size: Make text larger to reduce the need to strain and squint.
If you work on a computer all day, it causes significant discomfort. Resolve by changing how you use your devices.
