| “ECHOES OF THE JUNGLE’S SWEET SURRENDER” - an Art Exhibition at Balay ni Tana Dicang

ABungalow artists’ foundation presents "Echoes of the Jungle’s Sweet Surrender," The end-of-residency exhibition features the works of curated by .

Located in Negros Occidental, the ABungalow project is an artist residency that begun since 2016. It gives the artist in residence another point of view of life, culture and the arts that may give resonance to the works the artists create in the island.

According to Alessia Terzaghi,
“Pablo Bermudez's works represent a state of contemplation of nature that puts humans in tune with the world, thus achieving a collective consciousness as a unique form of life: a nirvana, an idyllic garden where nature and humans coexist harmoniously. The seemingly abstract works consist of a naive creative act, photography is undermined by abstract painting as a form of destruction and deconstruction of the real image.”

“Natural forms have always been imitated by humans as they exert an attractive force on them. Similarly, the artist perceives this gravity toward nature and especially toward the jungle, which he experienced in Colombia, his native country, & which he will miss for much of his life; this lack will be partially filled here in Negros, where the nature of both the jungle and the sugarcane crops is so similar to his place of origin that the connections between the two countries are evident. In the photographic shots we can see how the architecture of Balay ni Tana Dicang by taking up the forms of nature exists in a balanced way with & in it. “ She stated.

Launched on the 14th of July, 2023, "Echoes of the Jungle’s Sweet Surrender" is hosted by Sir Adrian Lizares which serves as a reflection of the artist’s life experience that resonates to Negros’ lush tropical vegetations, sugarcane plantations and natural sceneries through the prominent story of a century-old home known as Balay ni Tana Dicang.

| “BALAY NI TANA DICANG”- Ancestral House

Balay ni Tana Dicang is one of the most beautifully preserved ancestral houses in the Philippines and a testament to the established family that lived there.

Located at the province known as “The sugar capital of the Philippines”, Negros Occidental—specifically within Talisay City—nowhere’s this notion more real than the tale of this “Bahay na Bato” or House of Stone which through many generations, has been left standing gracefully. This century-old home was built back in 1800s and it was the residence of former Talisay Mayor Efigenio Treyes Lizares and the sugar baroness Kapitanaor Enrica Alunan Lizares.

Like the traditional bahay na bato, the Balay is a structure with large wooden posts sunk into the ground to carry the roof but are independent of both stone wall below and wooden walls above. Some walls has been stripped of later layers of paint, revealing the original aqua color of the room. Surfaces of the exterior and interior are embellished with classical motifs, moldings, cornices, medallions, and pilasters show that much attention was given to detail. Tana Dicang's furniture remain well-preserved even to these days. According to Adjie Lizares, one of the great grandchildren and the curator of the museum… She buried her silver, porcelain, and other precious belongings to keep them safe during the war. These artifacts are now on display in certain areas in the house.

A stone-made abode that was lovingly maintained by a tenacious lady who’s typically caring ahead of time. Moving along with modern times her home remains sustained in future generations, perhaps always by some events prevalent in the present days giving the public access to this precious legacy.
