What a find on our road trip through Tideswell!

The model spitfire and “the spitfire Inn” was built by Andy Batty and more than a dozen volunteers to form a major part of this year's carnival celebrations and to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the annual event, which began in 1946.

The Spitfire was critical in defeating Luftwaffe air attacks during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
The RAF said more Spitfires were built than any other British combat aircraft before or since World War Two 20,341 in total.

The military sections of Louyat Cemetery provide a powerful reminder of the human cost of both the First and Second World Wars. Within the cemetery lie the graves of French, German, and Commonwealth servicemen, each section reflecting the different nations and generations drawn into the conflicts that shaped Europe. German soldiers of the First World War are commemorated by rows of simple stone crosses, while French military graves and Commonwealth headstones from the Second World War stand nearby, creating a shared landscape of remembrance despite the divisions of wartime.

Many of the graves bear the names, ranks, and dates of death of individual soldiers, preserving a personal connection to those who served and died far from home. Some, such as the Commonwealth graves, also include inscriptions chosen by families, offering a glimpse into the grief and remembrance carried across generations. Alongside these are the graves of unknown soldiers, marked only by their nationality or service. These unidentified graves are particularly poignant, representing those whose identities were lost amid the confusion and destruction of war.

Taken together, the cemetery is more than a collection of graves; it is a memorial to all who were affected by conflict. The named and unnamed, the French, German, and Commonwealth dead, are united in death within this peaceful setting. Their graves serve as a lasting testament to sacrifice, loss, and the importance of remembering those whose lives were forever shaped by war.
