Wooden wicks create a special kind of coziness. But it’s important to remember that wooden wicks can be finicky.
1. Wooden wicks should be trimmed very short: before the first burn, it’s best to leave about 4–5 mm above the surface of the wax.
2. It’s best to trim them with sharp scissors or a special wick trimmer. The cut should be clean and even, without splitting the wood. Trim the wick only after the candle has fully set.
3. The wick should also be cleaned after each burn: once the candle has completely cooled, remove the charred, brittle top layer and leave about 4–5 mm again. With wooden wicks, the charred edge can often simply be snapped off with your fingers; just make sure to remove all the pieces from the wax.
A wooden wick that’s too long won’t necessarily produce a stronger flame: on the contrary, it may not be able to draw up enough wax, making the flame unstable — it may burn too brightly at first and then go out.
