Yayoi Kusama taught the world that imagination could be infinite.
She transformed dots, mirrors, repetition and colour into a visual language entirely her own and changed contemporary art forever.
From childhood, Kusama experienced hallucinations: flashes of light, colours and fields of dots that seemed to surround her. For her, polka dots were never simply a style. They were part of how she experienced the world. What she saw, she painted.
At the age of 28, during a moment of crisis, Kusama destroyed a large part of her early work and left for New York alone. There, she would become part of the avant-garde scene and exhibit alongside artists such as Andy Warhol.
In the early 1970s, she returned to Tokyo and voluntarily entered a psychiatric institution, where she would live for the rest of her life. Her studio stood just across the street. Every morning, she would cross over to work. At night, she would return to the hospital.
And she kept creating, until her final days.
