Today’s Inspiration: A detached two-bedroom house, each bedroom with its own en-suite bathroom. The open-plan design includes a kitchen, living room, and dining area. A sliding glass door separates the office space from the rest of the living area. The house features a metal roof, metal and concrete panel walls, with large open glass areas.
Outside, there’s a decked patio with a low-maintenance green area and a two-level swimming pool 😍

As architects, we hold crucial responsibilities in addressing climate change. It's imperative that we focus on protecting our environment by striving to achieve net zero emissions. Consider how much the weather has changed since we were children; our actions today will shape the world for future generations.

Transforming our built environment requires a new approach to designing and constructing buildings.

We urge the next government to establish whole life carbon targets for buildings, focus on retrofitting our existing housing stock through a National Retrofit Strategy, and require Post Occupancy Evaluation for publicly funded projects.

Collaboration between architects and the rest of the built environment sector is vital to share knowledge and achieve our objectives.

Natural Wood Flooring vs Laminate Flooring

When deciding between different types of flooring, it's important to consider factors such as durability, cost, maintenance, and aesthetic preferences. Here's a comparison between natural wood flooring and laminate flooring ( will follow with next post tomorrow):

Natural Wood Flooring

Pros:

1. Aesthetic Appeal: Offers a timeless, authentic look with unique grain patterns and warmth that can't be fully replicated by laminate.
2. Longevity: Can last for decades if properly maintained, and can be refinished multiple times to restore its appearance.
3. Value: Can increase the resale value of a home more than laminate flooring.
4. Eco-Friendly Options: Sustainable and renewable if sourced from responsibly managed forests.

Cons:

1. Cost: More expensive to purchase and install compared to laminate.
2. Maintenance: Requires regular maintenance, including refinishing, polishing, and more careful cleaning to avoid damage.
3. Susceptible to Damage: Can be scratched, dented, and damaged by water more easily than laminate.
4. Installation: More complex and time-consuming to install, often requiring professional help.

5 IDEAS HOW TO MAKE SMALL ROOM LOOK BIGGER by MKC Architects

1. Use Light Colours and Mirrors:
- Light Colors: Paint the walls in light, neutral colours such as whites, creams, pastels, or light greys.
- Mirrors: Place mirrors strategically across from windows or light sources to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space.

2. Optimize Furniture Choices:
- Multi-functional Furniture: Use furniture that serves multiple purposes, such as a sofa bed, a storage ottoman, or a foldable desk.
- Scale Appropriately: Choose furniture that fits the scale of the room. (Avoid bulky& oversized pieces)

3. Declutter and Organize:
- Minimalist Approach & Vertical Storage: Make use of vertical space, wall-mounted storage units to draw the eye upward and create the sense of a higher ceiling.

4. Maximize Natural Light:
- Sheer Curtains: Use sheer or light-filtering curtains instead of heavy drapes to let in more natural light.

5. Use Rugs and Floor Patterns:
- Rug Placement: Place rugs strategically to define different areas of the room, which can create the illusion of more space
- Diagonal Patterns: Use flooring or rug patterns that run diagonally.

I’m often asked by friends and clients how to choose the best color for their homes. You might know you want a change but aren’t sure how to start. Here are a few tips for you!

1. Consider the mood you want to create: Think about the atmosphere you want to create in each room. For example, calming colors like blues and greens are great for bedrooms, while energizing colors like yellows and oranges are better suited for living areas.

2. Take into account natural light: Consider the amount of natural light that enters each room. Rooms with lots of natural light can handle darker colors, while rooms with less light may benefit from lighter, brighter colors to make them feel more spacious.

3. Use color psychology: Consider the psychological effects of colors and how they can impact mood. For example, cool colors like blues and greens can create a sense of tranquility, while warm colors like reds and oranges can create a sense of energy and excitement.

4. Coordinate with existing decor: Take into account the furniture, flooring, and other elements in the room when choosing colors. Make sure the colors you choose complement and enhance the existing decor rather than clash with it.

5. Test samples: Before painting an entire room, test out paint samples on the walls to see how they look in different lighting conditions throughout the day. This can help you visualize how the colors will look once they are fully applied.

6. Consider the size of the room: Dark colors can make a room feel smaller and cozier, while light colors can make a room feel larger and more open. Consider the size and layout of the room when selecting colors to create the desired effect.

By following these guidelines and considering your own personal preferences, you can choose the best colors for your home that reflect your style and create a harmonious and inviting living space.
