Winner of the latest edition of the Young Musicians’ Award, percussionist Miguel Traquina returned to Portugal to enrol on the Master’s degree in Music Teaching – specialising in Instrumental and Ensemble Music – at the Higher School of Applied Arts (ESART). Inspired by the pedagogical guidance of André Dias, his secondary school teacher, and following half a decade of training in Switzerland, at the age of 23 the musician chose the Polytechnic University of Castelo Branco (UPCB) to consolidate his skills in both performance and teaching.
The young man’s professional journey – having initially considered studying Engineering Physics due to his interest in science – began at the age of 10 at the Cister Music Academy in Alcobaça, where he tried his hand at classical guitar before settling on the marimba, eventually joining the local philharmonic orchestra. He later continued his studies at the Espinho Professional School of Music and, in 2021, enrolled at the Geneva University of Music, where he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in specialised musical performance with a focus on solo performance.
In addition to taking first place in the percussion category at the 2026 Young Musicians’ Award (three years after securing second place), Miguel Traquina’s achievements include both first prize at the Gondomar International Percussion Competition (2026), and third place at the IPEA International Percussion Competition in Shanghai (2025) and the TROMP International Percussion Competition in Eindhoven (2024, where he returned two years later for solo concerts and performances with the other prize-winners). Also notable on his CV are the first prize at the Swiss Percussion Competition (2023) and the Viana do Castelo 21st Century Composition Prize (2020), as well as third place at the Paços’ Premium International Music Competition (2019).
In the field of performance, the ESART-UPCB student is a member of the Phaesium Percussion Group, a percussion collective in which, alongside Pedro Simões and Manuel Dias, he blends traditional influences with contemporary sounds. As a solo artist, his fascination with storytelling – coupled with his love of rock and metal – led him to create the project Umbral, which blends an acoustic repertoire with electronic elements and theatrical performance. He has also collaborated with the French-Swiss Orchestra, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra, Eklekto Geneva Percussion Center and the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt.
Miguel Traquina’s artistic vision draws inspiration from cinema (Stanley Kubrick, Denis Villeneuve and Guillermo del Toro) and English-language stand-up comedy (Ricky Gervais and Bo Burnham), references that shape the theatrical tone and subtle irony found in his work.
