The Kosmaj Monument rises from the hills south of Belgrade like a fractured star breaking through stone.
Built in 1971 by sculptor Vojin Stojić and architect Gradimir Medaković, it commemorates the fallen soldiers of the Partisan Kosmaj Detachment during the Second World War.
The structure's five concrete arms stretch upward in a gesture of defiance and rebirth, their sharp edges catching the light as if frozen mid-explosion.

Set against open fields and sky, the monument appears both ancient and futuristic, its brutalist geometry softened only by the landscape around it. Like many Yugoslav memorials of the era, it was conceived not as a static monument but as a place of gathering and reflection. Today, the Kosmaj Monument stands weathered yet intact, a relic of a country that no longer exists and a reminder of how architecture once carried the weight of collective memory.

At its peak, Nakagin was the building everyone talked about. 1972. Ginza. Kisho Kurokawa tries something radical: two concrete cores with 140 prefabricated steel capsules, each about nine square meters, pre-wired, pre-plumbed, ready to swap like phone batteries. A living tower.

Who was it for? Traveling salarymen who wanted a private pod in the center of Tokyo. Built-ins, reel-to-reel deck, TV, desk, round window, compact bath. Plug in and live.

Metabolism in real life. Permanent "body," replaceable "organs." If it worked, cities could renew without tearing themselves down.

The first capsule replacement was due around year 25. No lifecycle fund. Owners split and a supermajority was required. Code and asbestos upgrades sent costs up. Suppliers for the original parts were gone. Banks had no appetite. The system jammed.

Fast forward to 2012. Only about 30 units were occupied. The rest were storage or dark. The idea, though, traveled. Students, architects, and photographers flew in to see the prototype.

In 2022 demolition began. Some capsules were saved for museums and private collections. The site moves on. The question stays: how do we build for change, not just for now?
