Nisa’s traditional “olaria pedrada” pottery tells a fascinating story of Portuguese craftsmanship and railway life.

These handmade pieces were once used to keep water cool and to sell fresh water at railway stations. Their distinctive decoration was created by carefully embedding small quartz stones into the clay. The more quartz stones a piece contained, the more valuable and prestigious it was considered.
