“GUISS GUISS – Between Mask and Identity” – Laye Thioune
Curator: Sylvain Sankalé
📍 After 5 Art Escape, Arad
📅 Closing Event: June 6, 2026, 6:00 PM
After 5 Art Escape Gallery invites you to the closing event of “GUISS GUISS – Between Mask and Identity”, an exhibition by Senegalese visual artist Laye Thioune, curated by renowned art critic Sylvain Sankalé.
The exhibition explores identity, representation, and the relationship between appearance and essence. Its title comes from the Wolof language, where guiss guiss can be translated as “to look” or “ways of seeing”, suggesting the multiple perspectives through which identity is constructed and perceived.
About Laye Thioune’s work, Sylvain Sankalé writes:
“Reserved and not overly expansive, his works speak for him, and they do so wonderfully! In his practice, gesture takes precedence over discourse: he lets the work speak for itself.
The artwork is there, radiant and colorful, speaking directly to us.
[...] The artist does not reveal himself, yet he sees, he knows, and he remains silent.
Behind the generosity of color and the brilliance of the artist emerges a message driven by a profound aspiration: that of a humanity moving toward greater openness, tolerance, and love.
[...] This is the virtuosity of an artist who, with remarkable restraint and without seeking grand effects, invites us to see and to be seen beyond appearances.”
Join us for the final opportunity to experience Laye Thioune’s artistic universe.
The exhibition can be visited until June 6, 2026 (inclusive), at After 5 Art Escape Gallery:
• Monday, Thursday & Friday: 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM
• Saturday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
