Why does custom furniture cost more, but actually cost less over time?

Because it’s made specifically for your space, every inch is functional and every detail is tailored to your needs. Fewer compromises, fewer replacements, and better value over time.
Designed specifically for your home using premium materials and quality craftsmanship, custom furniture is an investment that serves you for years, eliminating the need for frequent replacements.

What would you choose?
To replace your furniture every 5 years, or to enjoy the same custom-made furniture for 20 years?

Invest once. Enjoy it every day.

Good furniture is not only about what you see. It is also about how every hinge, drawer and mechanism performs, day after day.

At the invitation of Julius Blum GmbH and Blum Romania , I had the opportunity to visit their headquarters and factories in Bregenz, Austria, alongside a group of professionals from Romania’s furniture industry.

Seeing the manufacturing processes behind the systems we use, learning about the latest solutions and technologies, and exchanging ideas with people who know this industry so well made this a genuinely valuable experience.

At Furniture Factory, we believe our clients deserve more than good design. They deserve carefully selected materials, premium hardware and solutions we understand down to the smallest detail. Staying close to innovation helps us make better choices and create furniture that looks good, works well and is built to last.

Thank you to the Blum teams in Romania and Austria for the invitation, the warm welcome and the excellent organization.

And thank you to everyone who shared this experience with me. The conversations, ideas and connections were every bit as valuable as the factory visits themselves.

I am taking home new ideas, fresh perspectives and plenty to put into practice.

Milano. A 3-a participare.

Asta e diferenta reala intre “ok” si “wow”.

Pentru ca un front 3D fara un finisaj corect… arata ieftin.
Un front simplu, dar vopsit exceptional… poate arata premium.

La .ro mergem exact in directia asta:

* modelare + frezare 3D
* vopsitorie controlata pe forme complexe
* testare de finisaje speciale, nu doar culori standard

Trendul e clar:
mobila devine din ce in ce mai aproape de obiect de arta.

Intrebarea nu mai e “ce culoare alegi?”
Ci: ce efect vrei sa creezi in spatiu?

This year, around EuroCucina and Milan Design Week, one thing became very clear to me: the kitchen is no longer just furniture. It is becoming architecture. A living system. A technical object that needs to be beautiful, functional, flexible and almost invisible when you don’t use it.

And Valcucine continues to be one of the brands that shows this better than almost anyone else.

What I like about them is not only the visual impact. Yes, the kitchens look amazing. Yes, the materials are beautiful. Yes, everything feels expensive, precise and very Italian.

But the real value is in the systems.

The way they hide the working area.
The way storage becomes part of the architecture.
The way a kitchen can open when you need it and disappear when you don’t.
The way glass, metal, stone and ceramic replace the usual furniture logic of PAL and MDF.

Valcucine doesn’t treat the kitchen like a set of cabinets.

They treat it like a machine for living.

And this is what impressed me the most in Milan this year: the best kitchens are not trying to look like kitchens anymore. They are trying to become part of the house, part of the wall, part of the space, part of the lifestyle.

Of course, this level of design comes with a price. A serious Valcucine kitchen can easily go from tens of thousands of euros to well over 100.000 EUR, depending on configuration, systems, materials, appliances and installation.

But when you see the engineering behind it, you understand something important:

Luxury is not just about expensive finishes.

Luxury is when complexity disappears.

When you open a door and everything is there.
When you close it and the space becomes clean again.
When the mechanism works so smoothly that you forget how much thinking is behind it.

For me, as someone who builds bespoke furniture, this is the real lesson from Milan:

The future is not just custom-made furniture.

The future is custom-thinking.

Some kitchens are built around function.

This one is built around matter.

At Salone del Mobile Milano 2026, presented Basalt as part of its Rare Matter collection: a retro-brutalist story where material is not just a finish, but the starting point of the entire project.

And you can feel that immediately.

Metal-clad fronts.
A stainless steel countertop combined with volcanic rock.
A compact, sculptural island with clean geometries.
A vertical door opening system developed by Visionnaire in collaboration with Salice.
Light, reflection, texture and engineering, all working together in one object.

Visionnaire is not a regular furniture brand. Its roots go back to Bologna, 1959, through IPE, while the Visionnaire brand has been building its identity since 2004 around Italian craftsmanship, bespoke interiors, material experimentation and high-end residential, hospitality, yachting and aviation projects.

So this kitchen is not just a kitchen.

It is a technical object.
A design statement.
A piece of architecture.
Almost a sculpture you can cook in.

The price?

Just a small detail: 300,000 EUR.

As someone who works with bespoke furniture, I find this fascinating.

Not because every client needs a 300k kitchen.

But because projects like this push the industry forward. They show what is possible when design, engineering, rare materials, hardware and craftsmanship are treated with the same level of obsession.

Luxury furniture is not only about price.

It is about intention.

And this kitchen has a lot of it.
