that means ‘one third’ in Arabic and refers to the size of the nib on the reed pen. The width of these nibs was measured in horse-hairs, which was the unit of measurement in the 11th century! (Photo courtesy of Firdaus Mahadi)

أن خط الثلث سمى بهذا الأسم لأن مقياس القلم ثلث من عشرون شعرة من عرف الحصان و هو وحدة القياس المستعملة في القرن الحادي عشر .

Khan As'ad Pasha, Damascus, Syria
: أكبر خان في مدينة دمشق القديمة، يغطي مساحة 2،500 متر مربع . يقع على امتداد سوق البزورية، تم بناؤه وسمي على اسم أسعد باشا العظم، حاكم دمشق، في 1751-1752. وقد وصف خان أسعد باشا كواحد من أرقى الخانات في دمشق وأكثر أعمال لهندسة المعمارية في المدينة طموحا. طوال العهد العثماني، كان يستضيف القوافل القادمة من بغداد والموصل وحلب وبيروت وأماكن أخرى في الشرق الأوسط.

Khan As'ad Pasha, Damascus, Syria...
The largest khan in the Old City of Damascus, covering an area of 2,500 square meters (27,000 sq ft). Situated along Al-Buzuriyah Souk, it was built and named after As'ad Pasha Al-Azm, the governor of Damascus, in 1751-52. Khan As'ad Pasha has been described as one of the finest khans of Damascus, and the most "ambitious" work of architecture in the city. Throughout the Ottoman era, it hosted caravans coming from Baghdad, Mosul, Aleppo, Beirut and elsewhere in the Middle East.
