1. Stop decorating around your furniture and start decorating with it, your sofa should anchor the whole room, not just fill an empty wall
2. Get the rug that fits under the front legs of every single piece in the seating area, if you can see bare floor between the sofa and rug, start over
3. Move your curtain rod so thereâs only a fistâs width between the rod and the ceiling, not the window, the ceiling
4. Put your overhead light on a dimmer and never use it alone, add a floor lamp in a corner, a table lamp at eye level, something that creates a glow not a glare
5. Find one piece that didnât come from a store, a flea market find, something inherited, something you had to hunt for. Thatâs what makes a room feel like yours
6. Put something rough next to something smooth, a chunky knit throw on a sleek leather sofa, a raw wood tray on a glossy table. The contrast is the point
7. Hang art that makes you think it might be too big, thatâs when you know itâs right
8. Float your sofa at least 18 inches from the wall, if your back is against the wall, so is your furniture
9. Buy one piece you canât fully explain, a sculptural object, an odd lamp, something that makes people ask about it
10. Turn off every overhead light tonight and see what your room actually looks like, then build your lighting from there
