How can a city be expressed through ink?

Inkscape Gothenburg is an abstract interpretation of Gothenburg, a city shaped by water, movement, history and industry.

Expressive black ink lines trace the rhythm of the city and its waterways. Within the fluid composition, sailing boats, the harbour and an old fortress emerge subtly, connecting Gothenburg’s maritime heritage with its contemporary urban identity.

In the lower corner, a water lily introduces a quiet Eastern element — a moment of stillness within the movement of the city. Here, traditional Chinese ink painting meets the Nordic landscape, creating a dialogue between Eastern artistic sensibility and Western urban memory.

Rather than depicting the city literally, the work explores its underlying character: the flow of water, the traces of history, the movement of people and the relationship between nature and the built environment.

For me, ink is more than a medium. It is a way of observing, interpreting and connecting different worlds.

The Flowing Lifeline | Ink Gothenburg No.3

Today, I would like to share a work that is very close to my heart — The Flowing Lifeline.

The inspiration for this painting came from observing the shape of the Gothenburg map. Rather than depicting the map literally, I transformed the geographical form of the city into a continuously flowing ink trajectory.

It can be a river, a sea current, or, more importantly, the pulse of a city constantly moving forward.

The painting is built around powerful black ink brushstrokes. Through variations in density, wetness, dryness, rhythm and empty space, the brushwork creates a sense of movement and flow. Subtle blues and violets are woven into the composition, bringing together the expressive spirit of contemporary Chinese ink, the maritime character of Gothenburg, its industrial heritage, and the visual language of industrial design that has shaped my own creative background.

Within the layers of ink, fragments of Gothenburg gradually emerge — sailing boats, the container harbour, an old fortress, and elements of the city’s architecture. They are not literal representations of the city, but rather memories appearing and disappearing within the layers of ink.

At the centre of the painting, a rising sun casts warm golden light across the water.

For me, this sunrise is not only the visual centre of the painting. It also represents the Gothenburg I experience — a warm city full of life and energy.

Gothenburg is surrounded by an abundant and beautiful natural landscape, where the sea, islands, rocks and forests are deeply intertwined. Water is not simply a landscape outside the city; it is part of everyday life. In summer, there are countless places around Gothenburg where people can get close to the sea, swim, and simply enjoy the freedom of being surrounded by nature.

There is a natural connection here between people and nature, between the city and the water.

That is why the rising sun also represents warmth, freedom and hope.

It illuminates not only the water, but also the vitality of a city that continues to flow forward.

This is not a map, nor a literal depiction of Gothenburg.

It is Gothenburg as I experience it — a city shaped by history, industry, water, nature and an enduring sense of freedom.

From the past, through the present, and towards the future.

The pulse of a city, flowing forward.

The exhibition is still going on, and I’m continuing to meet old friends and make new ones. 😁

Yesterday was especially lovely — students from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg came to visit the exhibition and enjoy my paintings.

I was also very happy to welcome some former colleagues from my years in the automotive industry, as well as students from my weekend Chinese ink painting classes. Thank you all for your support and for coming to see my work. 🙏

From sharing working days together many years ago, to meeting again today at my own art exhibition — it feels truly special.

The exhibition continues at UNI3 until October 16.

Today was a truly unforgettable day. ❤️

My first solo art exhibition officially opened here in Gothenburg.

So many people came — friends from China and Sweden, former mentors, managers, colleagues, and friends who have supported and accompanied me along the way. The room was filled with beautiful flowers, warm smiles and laughter. In that moment, it felt as if so many years of my life had suddenly come together again.

What touched me even more was that some of my paintings found new homes today.

And the people who chose them were some of the mentors, friends, colleagues and managers who have been an important part of my journey.

For me, this is about so much more than simply selling a painting. It feels like a beautiful recognition from both my past and my present.

Thank you for believing in my work, and for all the trust, encouragement and support you have given me along the way.

A very special thank you to my dear sister in Canada, who sent me flowers all the way here. 🌷
When I saw them, I honestly felt like crying.

Today felt like a little reflection of my life — from China to Sweden, from design to painting, from the past to the present. So many people and so many stories came together again in one beautiful moment.

Thank you for being part of my journey.
Thank you for being there to witness this special moment with me.

I am truly touched, grateful and happy. ❤️

I’m honestly quite emotional — I almost feel like crying. ❤️

The paintings are almost all up on the walls now, and the result is even better than I imagined. I’m truly so excited. This is the first solo exhibition of my life, and I’m especially happy that it is happening here in Gothenburg, Sweden.

This year also happens to mark a special milestone for me — I have spent half of my life in China and half in Sweden. Along the way, Gothenburg, its coastline, sunlight, wind, and the warmth between people and the city have gradually found their way into my paintings.

A very special thank you again to UNI3 and the entire team for your support and for making this exhibition possible. 🙏
