It was never “just a children’s story”

George Lucas studied centuries worth of anthropology just so that Star Wars made sense.

(The same way I studied Norse Mythology for that Viking Family Portrait I painted)

In taking the time to engross yourself in the movies, TV series, and books, you are learning not only about others, but you are learning about yourself too.

You are learning your place in the galaxy. You are also learning your place in the galaxy can change.

It teaches how to navigate life and how to cope with the things we can’t control, much like religion does.

It is one of the truest reflections of human nature. That’s why you feel like you belong— because you do.

Why else do you think it’s so relatable across distance and time?

I will probably paint Star Wars for the rest of my life, regardless of if I’m commissioned to do so.

This is a commission I did for a sweet boy who approached my table at Really Cool Comic Con last year. I was giving my usual spiel of “I do custom artwork. This is some of my fan art but I do pet portraits, landscapes, OC’s—“ and he darts across the aisle and asks, “You do OC’s?!”

I said, “Yes I do!”
He goes, “Can you do one of my OC’s for me?”
To which I responded, “Of course! How big do you want it?”
He shrugged, “Umm..I don’t know”
I asked, “Well let me ask you this. How much money can you spend on this?”
He gives me a number and I pull out a 10”x10” canvas and ask, “Is this size is okay?”
He exclaims, “Yes! But my money is at home where I’m saving it”
I told him, “That’s alright, you can pay me after. How about you give me your mom’s number and we’ll work out the details?”

He thanks me profusely and then proceeds to tell me more about this character and why it’s so important to him.

This is why I love doing commissions. There are many paintings that I want to do for my own sake, but I will never give up painting for others —especially kids. I meet some of the sweetest people and I get to make their ideas come to life. It is such an honor to see that something I made brought joy to another human. If I could share the smile he gave me when I delivered his painting, you’d understand how contagious that spark is.

So please, make my day and commission me to paint something for you. I am genuinely happy to do it. ❤️

I actually know 10,000 more facts about Norse Mythology now, but here are some of the basics

In terms of how that relates to this family, I realize I didn’t have to go this hard for “just a painting”

But the client “Freya” told me about how much husband “Odin” likes Runes, and I really wanted to do him justice

So I took in any personal information to make this portrait as informative and unique as possible

May this portrait immortalize the family and their history for generations yet to come.
