Designed by Samira Boon, Furoshiki Shiki turns a single sheet of semi-transparent vinyl into something surprisingly useful.

Inspired by the Japanese tradition of wrapping, the material clings gently to itself, holding its shape without zips, buttons or stitching. Fold it around your stationery, everyday essentials or whatever you need to carry, then open it up and start again.

Made in Japan, in a wonderful range of fluorescent colours.

A salt jar that puts the natural properties of clay to good use.

Handmade in Shiga, Japan, from the sandy clay of the Lake Biwa region, this little pot draws on the traditions of Shigaraki pottery.

The ceramic naturally helps regulate moisture, keeping salt slightly moist and easy to pinch. With its warm, earthy finish and neatly fitted lid, it’s a practical piece for the everyday kitchen.

I love seeing how far they can take a sheet of paper — cutting, folding and shaping it into something completely different.

These traditional Seto Maneki-Neko are made by Chugai Toen in Seto, Japan. Their long bodies, curved backs and very serious little faces give the old Seto style its distinctive look.

If you’ve eaten at a Japanese teishoku restaurant, you’ve probably seen this little grinder sitting on the table.

The Slickey-N has been a familiar part of Japanese dining for decades. Simple, compact, and designed to grind sesame just before you eat.

Freshly ground sesame has a completely different aroma. Just a few turns over rice, noodles, tofu or salad, and you can immediately taste the difference.

Perhaps that’s why this little grinder has hardly changed over the years.

When something is thoughtfully designed from the beginning, there isn’t much to improve.

I’ve always liked how something with such a simple job can become so playful in Japan. You only need one for a pair of chopsticks, yet somehow there are hundreds of things it can look like.
