We’re excited to share that our project “Nowhere Baths” has been shortlisted for the Dezeen Awards 2025 (Interiors category)!

Nowhere Baths is a gender-inclusive bathhouse located in Singapore’s Dempsey Hill, a former military compound. Housed in a refurbished colonial-era barrack, the project is conceived as a journey through shifting thermal atmospheres and sensory immersion.

Thank you for the recognition!

Situated within the historic Peranakan enclave of Emerald Hill, this project reinterprets the traditional Chinese Baroque shophouse as a contemporary residence that seamlessly integrates heritage conservation with modern family living. The site’s distinctive duality-an intimate residential precinct framed by ornate, colonial-era facades, juxtaposed against the dynamic commercial thoroughfare of Orchard Road-provided the conceptual foundation for a design approach predicated upon reconciliation of historic typology and spatial fluidity.

The innovation lies in how we reimagined both the ritual of bathing and the means of constructing such a space within the constraints of Singapore’s climate, labour environment, and social norms. The design addresses this by merging sensory immersion with architectural restraint.

The elliptical bathing volumes—seemingly organic and handcrafted—are, in fact, the product of a digitally rationalised, layered EPS foam system, CNC-cut and sculpted with minimal waste. This hybrid method of digital precision and manual refinement enabled highly tactile forms to be delivered cost-effectively in a high-labour-cost environment, turning technological constraint into a built expression of sensuality and calm.

Nowhere Baths redefines what a communal wellness space can be in a tropical, urban context. In Singapore, where bathing is typically functional and private, the challenge was to create a new cultural typology: a communal bathhouse born of the tropics, not borrowed from colder climates or foreign traditions.

Nowhere Baths is a gender-inclusive bathhouse located in Singapore’s Dempsey Hill, a former military compound. Housed in a refurbished colonial-era barrack, the project is conceived as a journey through shifting thermal atmospheres and sensory immersion. Elliptical volumes cradle the body and blur boundaries between architecture and nature. Framed views, infinity pools, and softened light connect interior and forest. The use of textured plaster, terracotta tiles, and corrugated aluminium, materials drawn from the site’s military past is reinterpreted to create a tactile experience of stillness and renewal. More than a retreat, it is a space of presence, ritual, and elemental connection.

Charged with the energy of Taipei, this bar channels the city’s pulse into a layered interior of raw materials—porous stainless steel and a birch timber DJ booth anchoring the space like a campfire. Lighting shifts from the warmth of dusk to the cool twilight of moonrise, casting an ethereal glow across the terrain.

Indirect lighting is incorporated through concealed LED strips, which illuminate the timber surfaces. This lighting strategy produces a soft, diffused glow, an effect reminiscent of daylight filtering through a natural canopy. The result is an attempt to enhance the sense of openness and lightness throughout the apartment. By combining simple indirect lighting techniques with natural materials, this design seeks to challenge our perception of the physical boundaries of high-rise urban living, instead suggesting a fluid experience that enhances the overall spatial connections with the external environment
