Over the past month or so, I have started making a series of short videos on rugs. In this post, I have explained the cause of imperfections in rugs and their relation to poetry, and how some poets, like Rumi, move beyond form at the expense of structure. Perhaps my attempt is similar, doing the best I can with aesthetics, but focusing on the content, as I am not yet proficient with video editing and am a camera-shy person by nature. My far-from-perfect English, being a non-native, self-taught speaker, adds to the imperfections. However, I am dying to share what I have learned in the past forty years of working with rugs and my passion for them. I hope you close your eyes to the flaws and, perhaps, learn from what I share.

The full version of the particular Rumi poem is here. I am sure you could get a decent translation via numerous applications that bridge the language barriers nowadays, to some degree, and I would be more than happy to respond to your questio

Technology advances, and many think of it as an unstoppable phenomenon to which one must adapt and bow one’s head. However, there is a charm in bygone methods that remains mesmerising. Life would have been so much better if one could have lived it in one’s own way. Some still do, and remain reminders of our humanity.

A rug begins long before the first knot is tied.

* I designed this rug to express the emotions that confinement within walls arises, those made by or for us, visible or non. Walls keep us from soaring and transcending beyond the set boundaries, limiting our view of the infinite horizons of possibilities beyond.

Such walls are all around us, experienced and felt by all, igniting a deep-seated desire to break them down, smash them and fly beyond their constraints.

This rug could serve as a reminder to keep the inner flame burning, to maintain our spirit, and to believe unwaveringly that these walls can be crossed and stepped over, for we stand taller than the walls.

This tribal Afghan rug, depicting a fierce Velociraptor, is a fascinating example of how the powerful influence of mass media can transform profoundly traditional and conservative art forms. The weaver was probably inspired by the iconic Jurassic Park, as it was woven around the same time the film was released.
While some may view this phenomenon as a destructive force, others may see it as an essential and inevitable aspect of the evolution of art and culture. The dilemma of balancing the preservation of traditional values and virtues with the demands of a rapidly changing world is something that we face in our daily lives. As we gradually surrender our souls to the allure of the new age, I am deeply concerned about the powerful influence of the Velociraptors who control the mass media and (or) run the world. The least I can do is to continue to celebrate and enjoy the beauty of the handmade carpets, one of the most amazing human heritage.
