Something most renovation companies won't show you.

We're currently on site at a 4-bedroom condo in Ang Mo Kio Rise — a family of three, senior parents and their daughter, every room designed around how they actually live.

But here's the part nobody talks about.
When we demolished the original developer wardrobe in the reading room to make way for a custom double-tier bookshelf, we discovered something unexpected — there was no flooring underneath. The developer had simply never laid it, knowing the wardrobe would cover it.

We could have ignored it. Nobody would have known.

Instead we hacked out the area properly, made good the subfloor, laid new timber to match, and revarnished the entire reading room floor so every plank is consistent and seamless. The client never had to ask. It was the right thing to do.

This is what 11 years in this industry teaches you — not just how to design beautiful spaces, but how to protect the people who trust you with their home.

Full reveal coming once the family moves in. Are you planning a renovation and wondering what questions to ask your contractor? Drop them in the comments — happy to answer honestly.

Interior designers are NOT middlemen. Here's what we actually do. 🪵

11 years in Singapore. Every renovation lesson I've learned is yours.

Something I don't talk about enough as an interior designer.

Most homeowners in Singapore think hiring an interior designer is just paying for someone to pick curtains and tiles. I completely understand why — because that is what it looks like from the outside.

But here is what is actually happening behind the scenes.

Every centimetre of your space is being planned before a single nail goes in. Five to eight different contractors are being coordinated so they don't clash on site. Problems that would cost you tens of thousands to fix are being solved on paper first. And when the renovation is done, a good designer doesn't disappear — we stay.

A contractor executes. A designer protects your home, your budget, and your sanity.

I have been doing this in Singapore for 11 years. The renovation stories I have seen — both beautiful and heartbreaking — have taught me everything I know.

Has anyone here had a renovation experience — good or bad — that changed how you see the role of an interior designer? Share your story below. I read every single comment.

They asked for more storage and a touch of green.

What they got was a home that tells their story. 🌿

Dark walnut kitchen built floor to ceiling.
A glass-walled home office so the space never
feels closed off.
A forest green bedroom that feels like a
private retreat.
And storage hidden in every single corner.

This is a Singapore HDB renovation completed
in 8 weeks — planned down to the last centimeter
before a single contractor stepped in. 🪵

Every material chosen with purpose.
Every zone designed around how they actually live.

Honest question for Singapore homeowners 👇

When you hired or are thinking of hiring an
interior designer — what was your biggest concern?

A) Price and budget
B) Timeline and delays
C) Quality of workmanship
D) Communication and updates

I ask because after many years in this industry,
I notice most renovation stress comes from ONE
specific phase that most people never think about.

Comment your answer and I will share what I have
learned from over a decade of Singapore
renovations. 🇸🇬

After many years in interior design, the question I get
asked most is: "Why should I hire a designer instead
of going direct to contractor?"

Here is my honest answer 👇

A contractor builds what you tell them to build.
A designer plans what you should build — before
anything starts.

Space planning, material coordination, timeline
management — this happens BEFORE renovation begins.
And it is what separates a stressful renovation
from a smooth one.

This project in Singapore took 3 weeks of planning
before we touched a single wall. The result speaks
for itself. 🪵

Renovation Mistake #1: Choosing the lowest quote without understanding what’s included.

A cheaper quote may look attractive, but missing items and unclear scope can lead to costly variation orders later.
