Aphorism Antiques at Tiong Bahru

Aphorism Antiques at Tiong Bahru Aphorism Antiques at Tiong Bahru is a gallery specialised in European and oriental antiques and objets d'art from the XVIIIth to the early XXth century.

Our pieces are sourced from old European collections. Whether a fine French Art Deco cabinet, a Japanese Edo screen or a French cubist painting, we build our collection on artistic integrity and value for investment. Come and visit us at our office in the bohemian district of Tiong Bahru; a selection of fine pieces can be viewed there, where cataloging for future exhibitions across Singapore and on the net will be prepared. Or visit our internet site for a selection of our inventory.

Of the consequences of not using a passe-partout...

This hand-painted print from 1595 had come to us in an early 20th century mounting, the paper directly in contact with the glass.
Decades after, an attempt to unframe it revealed the paper stucked to the glass in various places, the traditional backing having not protected the work from past humidity.

The travelling casket

Made in the early 1700s probably in Indonesia for a merchant of the VOC, this lovely large amboyna box was brought to Europe likely by its Dutch owner and circulated to eventually reach the shelves of a British auction house (owned by a French) in Paris near the Champs Elysees.

It is now back in Southeast Asia after 300 years.

Mitteleuropa modernism?

We recently attended to this interesting lamp acquired in Paris. Our initial huntch was for a French modernist design, such as the work of Adnet - the irregular manual faceting of the crystal cones and the paper & textile power cord putting it to a pre-war era.
While tediously dismantling it for the purpose of rewiring it, appeared the inscription "Tchécoslova...". The surprising feature though is the French orthograph!
