Set along a narrow, balcony-lined street in Attard, Malta, an unassuming doorway opens into Casa Bonavita - a hotel lovingly restored over the course of a decade by Christopher and Suzanne Sharp.
At the heart of the hotel’s bar, our hand-painted ‘Scenes of Valletta’ wallpaper unfolds as a cinematic panorama across the Grand Harbour. Inspired by 18th-century depictions, including those of the Maltese artist Alberto Pullicino, the design captures the drama of arrival by sea.
Landmarks such as the Senglea Gardjola and Fort Saint Angelo rise from the horizon, while bastioned walls glow in Malta’s distinctive golden stone against a crystalline Mediterranean sky. In the foreground, aloe and prickly pears take root among the rocks, as black-winged stilts trace the water’s edge.
