Vermillion, a scarlet sage red wooden cafe nested in the heart of nature, Rayong.
It’s all started with a simple conversation,
I happen to have some old wooden panels left over from tearing down my old house.
I wondered, what should we do with it?
Our design approach prioritizes preserving the original character and its true essence.
The building’s core design is inspired by vernacular house forms. Most of the reclaimed
wood was used as external walls, flooring, stair structure as well as windows and doors with
an integration of steel structure enhancing building’s structural integrity.
Steel served as the building's major structure which bears the entire building’s load.
Extended steel beams function as the sole load-bearing axis. Moreover, the majority of the
steel types were from local suppliers in order to accommodate local technical capabilities of
the local laborers. Along with reclaimed elements including louver wall to reveal underlying
structure while referencing the low-profile house’s proportion, having a porch and extended
eaves providing protection from the rain.
Guided by the owner's vision to have a vibrant reddish, cosy and welcoming space, the cafe
takes the form of a familiar one story house with long and narrow layout positioned along
the garden pond.
The interior positioned counter bar that runs through the length of the building, creating a
space where the owner and customers can interact closely. Here, the air is filled with not
just the aroma of the coffee, but the stories of life and shared passion for art. It is a perfect
space to immerse the surrounding nature while enjoying wholehearted conversations.
Coming here is not just a visit to a cafe, it’s like dropping by a friend’s house for a chat.
