🌿🧵ถนนสายครามเริ่มต้นตั้งแต่การปลูกต้นครามไว้ในครัวเรือน รอเวลาเก็บเกี่ยว ต้นครามที่เก็บมาจะถูกนำไปหมักไว้โดยผ่านการผสมขี้เถ้า ปูนแดง ฯลฯ เพื่อมาทำให้เป็นเนื้อคราม โดยเนื้อครามที่ได้นี้สามารถเก็บใส่ภาชนะเช่นตุ่มไว้ได้เป็นปี และเนื้อครามส่วนที่จะมาก่อหม้อสำหรับย้อมผ้าก็ต้องมาผ่านการปรุงก่อน ซึ่งการก่อหม้อครามจำเป็นต้องมีขี้เถ้า น้ำตาล มะขามเปียก ปูนแดง ซึ่งว้ตถุดิบที่ใช้บางอย่างก็คือวัตถุดิบที่ใช้ในการทำอาหารไทยนั่นเอง ในแต่ละพื้นที่อาจใช้วัตถุดิบต่างกันออกไป แต่ยังคงต้องคำนึงถึงความเป็นกรดด่างที่ส่งผลกับหม้อความ หม้อครามต้องการการดูแลสม่ำเสมอ ต้องคอยหมั่นให้อาหาร เติมจุลินทรีย์ เพื่อได้หม้อครามที่ให้สีสวย ติดสีง่าย หากขาดการดูแลอย่างถูกต้อง หม้อครามก็จะตาย การก่อหม้อครามให้ได้น้ำครามที่ให้สีสวยนั้นค่อนข้างยาก ต้องอาศัยความรู้ความชำนาญอย่างมาก รวมถึงยังขึ้นอยู่กับปัจจัยภายนอกหลายอย่าง เช่น อุณหภูมิ ความชื้น คุณภาพน้ำ และอื่นๆ อีกมากมาย ความเข้มของสีครามที่ได้ขึ้นอยู่กับจำนวนหม้อครามที่เราใช้ในการย้อม ซึ่งบางครั้งอาจต้องย้อมถึง 10 หม้อ หรือย้อมหลายรอบเพื่อให้ได้สีที่เข้มมากๆ

The journey of indigo dyeing begins with planting indigo in household gardens and patiently waiting for harvest. Once collected, the indigo leaves are fermented with ash, lime, and other natural ingredients to create indigo paste, which can be stored for years. The paste is then carefully prepared with ash, sugar, tamarind, and lime—many of which are common Thai cooking ingredients—before being used for dyeing. Each region may have slight variations in ingredients, but maintaining the right pH balance is crucial. The indigo vat needs constant care and feeding to produce vibrant, long-lasting colors. Without proper maintenance, the vat will fail. Crafting the perfect indigo dye requires deep knowledge, skill, and attention to factors like temperature, humidity, and water quality. Sometimes, multiple vats or dyeing rounds are needed to achieve the desired intensity.
