𝑨 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓’𝒔 𝑫𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎: 𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑷𝒊𝒆𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝑯𝒐𝒎𝒆

Sometimes, the antiques find their way back together.

Three years ago, I acquired what remained of this magnificent carved temple gable. Although only part of the original survived, I was captivated by its deeply carved foliage, graceful birds, peacock, and the shimmering turquoise cut-glass mosaic that still caught the light. It was beautiful, but it always felt incomplete.

Last week, while browsing Facebook Marketplace, I came across another carved fragment. Something about the carving style, the glass, and the angle of the panel looked familiar. I couldn’t be certain—but I decided to take the chance.

When I brought it back to the gallery and placed it against the original…

…it fit perfectly.

After who knows how many decades apart, one of the long-lost sections of this temple gable has found its way home.

Moments like these are one of the great joys of working with architectural antiques. Every piece has a journey, and every now and then, you’re fortunate enough to reunite part of its history.

Now the search continues… perhaps one day the rest of the gable will appear.

Rare Gilt Brass Makara Corner Ornament
Sino–Southeast Asian, Late 19th–Early 20th Century

A rare and beautifully detailed gilt brass corner ornament depicting a makara, one of the most intriguing mythical creatures of the Himavanta forest and Buddhist cosmology.

This finely cast openwork example combines aquatic and terrestrial elements, with fish scales, a flowing tail, avian plumage, and the powerful head of a guardian beast. In traditional symbolism, the makara represents protection, abundance, fertility, and the passage between the earthly and spiritual realms. For centuries, such creatures adorned temples, shrines, ceremonial furniture, and sacred architecture throughout Southeast Asia.

The ornament retains traces of its original gilding and polychrome decoration, including remnants of red pigment, while the crisp chasing and punched detailing attest to the skill of its maker. Originally mounted to a larger ceremonial structure, it now stands as a striking sculptural artwork in its own right.

Late 19th–Early 20th Century Northern Thai Teak Architectural Pediment

An extraordinary architectural carving from Northern Thailand, originally created as a decorative overdoor panel or pediment for a monastery, noble residence, or elite merchant’s home.

Hand-carved from solid teak wood, this impressive piece displays a fascinating blend of traditional Lanna craftsmanship and Western decorative influences that became fashionable throughout Northern Thailand and the Shan States during the colonial era.

Executed in exceptionally deep relief, the composition features flowing acanthus-inspired scrolls, foliate arabesques, and floral festoons terminating in elegant pendant clusters. The intricate openwork carving creates a striking interplay of light and shadow, while the remarkable depth and undercutting showcase the skill of the original craftsman.

Carefully restored in our workshop, this rare architectural fragment makes a dramatic statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Early 20th Century Burmese Teak Revolving Bookcase📚

A charming and increasingly scarce revolving bookcase crafted from solid Burmese teak. Once a familiar sight in colonial-era homes, offices, and libraries, these practical pieces have become much harder to find today, particularly in sturdy, usable condition.

Designed to rotate smoothly on its central base, this example offers generous storage while occupying very little floor space. The three-tier arrangement accommodates a wide range of books, with the upper shelf particularly well suited to taller art, reference, and coffee table volumes.

The clean architectural lines, rich teak grain, and functional design make it equally appealing as a period furnishing or as a distinctive accent piece in a contemporary interior.

Unlike many surviving examples, this bookcase remains solid, stable, and ready for everyday use.

◈ Material: Burmese teak wood
◈ Origin: Burma (Myanmar)
◈ Period: Early 20th Century

◈ Burmese Monastic Manuscript Chest (Sadaik) ◈
Konbaung Dynasty, c. 1850–1885

An exceptional Burmese manuscript chest (sadaik) crafted from solid old-growth teak and dating to the Konbaung Dynasty. Traditionally used for the storage and protection of sacred palm-leaf Buddhist manuscripts, these important chests were commissioned for monasteries and temple libraries as acts of religious merit.

This impressive museum-quality example retains its original red lacquer ground decorated with finely rendered gilded scenes depicting courtly, religious, and architectural subjects. While the gold decoration has naturally mellowed through generations of use, significant portions of the original artwork remain visible across the surface, bearing witness to the remarkable craftsmanship of the period.

The rich patina acquired through centuries of monastic use has created a surface impossible to replicate, revealing layer upon layer of history. Constructed from old-growth Burmese teak and retaining its original lacquer and gilded decoration, this is an increasingly scarce example of traditional Burmese monastic furniture.

Both historically significant and visually striking, this rare piece would be equally at home in a serious collection of Southeast Asian art or as a statement coffee table in a refined interior.

Japanese Bronze Basket-Weave Flower Vase with Frog Motif
Signed 瑞彦 (Zu**en) | Takaoka Bronze Ware | Japan, c. 1910–1950

A beautifully crafted Japanese bronze flower vase inspired by the form of a traditional woven bamboo basket. The elegant gourd-shaped body is cast with an intricate ajiro (basket-weave) pattern, while a charming climbing frog provides a whimsical yet symbolic accent. In Japanese culture, the frog (kaeru) is considered a fortunate motif associated with safe returns, prosperity, and good fortune.

The tall, sweeping handle echoes the form of suspended bamboo flower baskets used in traditional ikebana and tea ceremony settings. The vase retains its rich dark patina and is signed on the base 瑞彦 (Zu**en), likely the mark of the artisan or workshop responsible for its creation.

Both decorative and functional, this is a refined example of Japanese bronze craftsmanship and would make an elegant addition to a collection of Asian decorative arts, tea ceremony objects, or Japanese metalwork.

◈ Origin: Japan
◈ Material: Cast bronze
◈ Period: Late Meiji to Early Shōwa, c. 1910–1950
◈ Signature: 瑞彦 (Zu**en)
◈ Motif: Basket-weave (ajiro) with climbing frog

✨ Shan Burmese Celestial Figure in Dry Lacquer ✨

A graceful and expressive example of Shan craftsmanship, this kneeling celestial figure is carved from teak wood and finished in the traditional Burmese dry lacquer technique. With hands joined in prayer and a warm, serene smile, the figure radiates a sense of devotion and gentle presence.

Particularly appealing are the finely incised decorative details across the costume, together with remnants of coloured cut-glass inlay that once shimmered brilliantly in candlelit interiors. The lightweight nature of the sculpture is characteristic of age and the lacquered construction, while the elegant proportions and charming facial expression make it a highly decorative piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

An increasingly difficult style to find in good condition, this Shan figure possesses the warmth, character, and craftsmanship that have made Burmese devotional sculpture so sought after by collectors.

◈ Teak wood with traditional dry lacquer finish
◈ Original cut-glass embellishments remaining
◈ Finely carved costume and headdress details
◈ Beautiful aged surface with excellent decorative appeal

✨ Mandalay Palace-Style Buddha Throne Stand ✨

An exceptionally well-preserved Burmese teakwood Buddha throne stand in the classic Mandalay style, richly adorned with original gilding and colourful cut-glass inlay.

What makes this example particularly remarkable is its intricate openwork back panel. These delicate pierced carvings are among the most fragile elements of such pieces and are frequently found with losses, repairs, or later replacements. Remarkably, this example survives completely intact, allowing the extraordinary quality of the original Mandalay craftsmanship to be fully appreciated.

The throne also retains a substantial amount of its original gilding and glass inlay, creating the luminous effect for which Burmese palace-style decorative arts are celebrated. Condition is exceptionally good overall, with only minor losses to a few small triangular border elements around the base.

Elegant, authentic, and increasingly difficult to find in this state of preservation, it serves beautifully as a display stand for a Buddha image, sacred object, or as a striking decorative work of art in its own right.

✧ Thai Teak Three-Headed Elephant Side Table ✧

A charming example of traditional Thai carving, this solid teak side table features a sculptural three-headed elephant base supporting a beautifully carved circular top. While undeniably whimsical, pieces like this have long been part of Thai decorative furniture traditions and are appreciated today for their craftsmanship, warmth, and unmistakable character.

The hand-carved floral border, lotus-inspired base, and richly figured teak give the table far more substance than its playful design might initially suggest. Equally suited as a lamp table, plant stand, or conversation piece, it brings a distinctly Southeast Asian touch to an interior.

◈ Hand-carved floral and foliate decoration
◈ Three-headed elephant pedestal base
◈ Rich warm patina and beautiful grain

✨ Burmese Pat Waing Panel | Mandalay Style

A rare and highly decorative teakwood panel from a traditional Burmese pat waing (drum circle), richly embellished with gilding and cut-glass mirror inlay in the celebrated Mandalay style.

The openwork lattice carving is exceptionally intricate, centering on what appears to be a ceremonial betel offering vessel, a motif associated with hospitality and courtly culture throughout Burma. The combination of scrolling foliate designs, sparkling mirror work, and warm gilt surface creates a remarkable interplay of light and shadow.

Originally one of a series of panels forming part of a larger ensemble, this example has been separated from the original structure and now functions beautifully as a decorative wall panel. It also stands independently, making it equally suitable for display on a console, shelf, or mantel as a sculptural object in its own right.

Pieces of this quality bring all the richness of traditional Burmese palace and monastery decoration into a contemporary interior, offering both history and visual impact.
