Here is a fascinating piece of Burmese social history in the form of a wedding box presented to Mr Tun Sein and Su Hia Tin sometime between 1920 and 1940. It has an intricate geometric mosaic inlay design on the lid and sides, created in the classic Burmese lacquerware technique known as Za-daung (lattice design). The handcrafted Yun technique is to scratch into layers of black thit-si (tree resin) and then fill with coloured paste (in this case a yellow gold colour). It is painstaking work that sometimes takes months to complete. As a wedding gift it is a personalized family object that has survived for around 100 years. It has two inscriptions: the first with the names of the couple and the second says Mingalar Let Saung (wedding gift) but sadly it does not tell us the precise date although the solid teak frame combined with the use of metal hinges provides the best clue. These pieces are a little fragile, show signs of wear and is truly a one-off piece waiting to be treasured by you.
