PERN BAAN officially launched just a few months ago, but our founder has been working on this project for years, and he was honored to be able share his design vision for this feature in last year. Big thanks to the Vogue team for visiting and sharing this story with your Thai readers!

PERN BAAN’s studio, showroom and residency space is officially opening this coming January, and we have big plans to celebrate with the design community here in Chiang Mai. More details to come soon!

The full ‘Hin Light Study’ family - a series of one-off table lamps created by PERN BAAN’s founder Robert last year.

Hin (หิน) means stone or rock in Thai. During a sourcing trip in central Thailand, Robert discovered a pile of unique boulders being sold by a roadside vendor in Pak Chong Province. After returning to his studio he began cutting and drilling the rocks, and over a period of several months, experimented with different methods of transforming their character with light.

The Hin Light Studies now populate different rooms in our Chiang Mai shophouse and serve as inspiration for future table lamp designs.

Ban Pa Ao Brass casting magic - Loong Boonmee and Paw Boon displaying the deft touch required to properly pour molten brass into their handmade cow dung/termite clay molds 🔥. The wax burnout oven and brass melting furnace are a rare sight these days as the BPA crew still fire theirs with locally sourced hardwood and charcoal rather than using gas.

The OTS Chair in green powdercoat and white cotton cord. This chair designed by .space was a fun build as it allowed us to explore new realms of fabrication here in Thailand. The steel frame was produced by a metal factory that primarily bends steel tubes that are used in the motorcycle industry.

The richly textured 40 Side Table in Ocher, Cream + Brown dyed parchment photographed at PERN BAAN’s Chiang Mai studio. Designed and fabricated by Bangkok’s .resources, the side table is named for its simple proportions - a perfect 40 cm cube.
