โครงการนี้เริ่มต้นจากคำถามเรียบง่ายว่า เราจะทำอย่างไรให้ “ข้าว” ซึ่งอยู่ในวิถีชีวิตของชาวร้อยเอ็ดมาอย่างยาวนาน ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงผลผลิตจากผืนดิน หากยังเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้ผู้คนหลากหลาย ตั้งแต่ชาวนา พ่อค้า นักเรียน ไปจนถึงนักออกแบบ ได้ร่วมกันบอกเล่าเรื่องราวของร้อยเอ็ดในมิติใหม่ มิติที่เต็มไปด้วยภูมิปัญญา วัฒนธรรม และความหวังที่ค่อย ๆ เติบโตจากฐานรากของท้องถิ่น
ภายใต้แนวคิด “Isaan Rise: Rice (Rise) Connecting” เราจึงพยายามมองศูนย์สร้างสรรค์แห่งนี้ ไม่ใช่ในฐานะอาคารที่โดดเด่นเหนือบริบท หากเป็นเสมือน “โรงบ่มเพาะ” ที่เปิดรับผู้คนอย่างถ่อมตัว เป็นมิตร และค่อย ๆ เติบโตไปพร้อมกับชุมชน เรื่องราวของข้าวจึงไม่ได้ถูกเล่าเพียงผ่านนิทรรศการ แต่ยังซึมอยู่ในวัสดุ รายละเอียดทางสถาปัตยกรรม และประสบการณ์ของผู้ใช้งาน เพื่อสะท้อนว่าร้อยเอ็ดมิได้มีเพียงภาพของท้องนาอันกว้างไกล หากยังอุดมไปด้วยองค์ความรู้ ความหลากหลายของสายพันธุ์ข้าว เครือข่ายผู้คน และศักยภาพในการต่อยอดสู่อนาคตอย่างสงบ งดงาม และน่าภาคภูมิใจ
แนวทางการออกแบบให้ความสำคัญกับ 3 ประเด็นหลัก ได้แก่
-Site Context
การปรับปรุงอาคารเดิมให้ทำหน้าที่เป็นรอยต่อระหว่างพื้นที่ภายในกับชีวิตของเมือง ผ่านสถาปัตยกรรมที่เปิดรับ เข้าถึงง่าย และเป็นมิตรต่อผู้คนทุกกลุ่ม โดยพยายามสร้างความต่อเนื่องระหว่างกิจกรรมภายในอาคารกับพื้นที่สาธารณะรอบข้าง เพื่อให้ศูนย์ฯ แห่งนี้ค่อย ๆ กลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิตประจำวัน และเป็นพื้นที่ที่ผู้คนรู้สึกว่า “เข้ามาได้เสมอ”
-Culture
การออกแบบอ้างอิงจากพื้นที่คุ้นเคยในวิถีชีวิตอีสาน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นชานบ้าน พื้นที่กึ่งภายนอก พื้นที่ใต้ร่มเงา หรือพื้นที่ยืดหยุ่นที่ปรับเปลี่ยนได้ตามกิจกรรม เราเชื่อว่าความเรียบง่ายของพื้นที่ลักษณะนี้ คือคุณภาพสำคัญที่ทำให้ผู้คนรู้สึกผ่อนคลาย ใกล้ชิด และเป็นเจ้าของร่วมกันได้โดยธรรมชาติ
-Material Upcycling
การออกแบบศูนย์สร้างสรรค์งานออกแบบโดยเลือกใช้วัสดุท้องถิ่นซึ่งเป็นเศษเหลือจากกระบวนการผลิตข้าว มิได้เพียงมุ่งเพิ่มมูลค่าให้กับทรัพยากรที่เคยถูกมองข้ามเท่านั้น หากยังเป็นการสร้างความรู้สึกมีส่วนร่วมและความเป็นเจ้าของร่วมของคนในพื้นที่ต่อโครงการอีกด้วย
แนวคิดการออกแบบจึงเน้นการประกอบรวมวัสดุชิ้นเล็กจากหลายแหล่งผลิตให้กลายเป็นองค์ประกอบสำคัญของสถาปัตยกรรม เช่น ผนังบางส่วนผลิตจากแกลบข้าวของนาลุงสมหมาย หรือวัสดุขึ้นรูปจากขี้เถ้าแกลบของนายายน้อย วัสดุแต่ละชิ้นจึงมิใช่เพียงส่วนประกอบทางกายภาพของอาคาร แต่เป็นตัวแทนเรื่องราว ผู้คน และภูมิปัญญาที่หลอมรวมอยู่ในพื้นที่เดียวกัน

This project began with a simple question: How can we ensure that “Rice” , a constant in the lives of Roi Et’s people, becomes more than just a product of the soil? How can it serve as an inspiration for diverse groups, from farmers and merchants to students and designers, to collectively tell the story of Roi Et through a new lens? This dimension is one rich in wisdom, culture, and a hope that gradually grows from local foundations.
Under the concept “Isaan Rise: Rice (Rise) Connecting,” we envision this creative center not as a building that dominates its context, but as an “incubator” that humbly and warmly welcomes the public, growing alongside the community. The story of rice is told not merely through exhibitions but is embedded within the materials, architectural details, and user experience. It reflects that Roi Et is more than just vast landscapes of paddy fields; it is a repository of knowledge, diverse rice varieties, human networks, and the potential to evolve into the future with peace, beauty, and pride.
The design focuses on three core pillars
-Site Context
Renovating the existing building to serve as a seam between the interior space and urban life. Through architecture that is open, accessible, and inclusive, we aim to create continuity between indoor activities and the surrounding public space. This ensures the center becomes a part of daily life, a place where people feel they can “always step in.”
-Culture
The design draws inspiration from familiar spaces in the Isaan way of life, such as the chan (elevated terrace), semi-outdoor areas, shaded spots, and flexible spaces that adapt to various activities. We believe the simplicity of these spaces is the key quality that fosters relaxation, intimacy, and a natural sense of collective ownership.
-Material Upcycling
By selecting local materials derived from rice production waste, the design does more than just add value to overlooked resources. It fosters a sense of participation and shared ownership among local residents.
The design concept emphasizes assembling small-scale materials from various sources into key architectural elements. For instance, certain walls are crafted from rice husks from Uncle Sommai’s farm, or molded materials made from rice husk ash from Grandma Noi’s kiln. Each material is thus more than a physical component; it is a representative of stories, people, and wisdom fused into a single space.
