Ateş her şeyi yavaşlatır.

Fire slows everything down.

In the flame, breath steadies, hands soften, and time stretches.
Making glass beads is not just a skill — it’s a moving meditation, where focus becomes calm and the mind goes quiet.

This is why people fall in love with glass.

The nazar boncuğu, Turkey’s iconic blue eye, is so much more than a beautiful talisman. For centuries, Turks have believed in the power of the “evil eye”: that envy, even unintentional, can bring misfortune. A compliment without saying “maşallah” (God has willed it), an admiring glance, even success itself, all can attract unwanted negative energy.

The nazar is the antidote. This vivid blue glass eye doesn’t just deflect bad energy, it absorbs it, often cracking or shattering in the process, having done its protective work. You’ll find nazars everywhere in Turkey: hanging in homes and cars, pinned to babies’ clothes, adorning jewelry, guarding doorways.

Here at Pera Glass Studio, beside Galata Tower in the heart of historic Istanbul, we honor this ancient tradition through lampworking, shaping molten glass by hand just as artisans have done for generations. Each piece carries the weight of centuries of belief and the warmth of handmade craft.

Whether you wear it as protection or simply as a connection to Istanbul’s living traditions, the nazar remains one of Turkey’s most enduring symbols.

In the shadow of Galata Tower, we turn fire and glass into jewelry. Each piece is handmade in our studio using traditional lampworking techniques—no two are exactly alike. This is where craft meets wearable art. 🔥

We recently hosted the loveliest couple in our studio.

They were celebrating their anniversary in Istanbul and decided to spend an afternoon learning lampworking. Watching them work together, navigating the challenges of working with molten glass, encouraging each other, and celebrating their finished pieces reminded us exactly why we love teaching these workshops.

They walked away with glass sculptures they made with their own hands, but the real gift was the experience itself. The laughter, the concentration, the pride in creating something beautiful together.

As Christmas approaches, we keep thinking about how the best gifts aren’t always things. Sometimes they’re experiences—afternoons spent learning something new, trying something you’ve never done before, making memories that outlast any object.

If you’re searching for a gift that truly resonates, consider booking a lampworking workshop at Pera Glass Art Studio. Our studio is located next to Galata Tower in Istanbul, and whether you’re visiting the city or you’re local, it’s a unique way to spend time together while learning an ancient craft.

Limited spots available before the holidays. You can also buy a gift certificate for a later visit in 2026! Send us a message to book your workshop!

Make Your Own Glass Art in Istanbul

A two-hour workshop. A torch. Molten glass. And your creativity.

At Pera Glass Studio in Galata, you'll learn traditional lampwork techniques from artist Gamze Haberal, who has over 25 years of experience in glass art and traditional Turkish craft methods.

This hands-on session teaches you to shape glass using flame—the same technique used to create authentic Nazar beads. You'll work individually, learn fundamental skills, and leave with a piece you made yourself.

The studio is located in historic Pera, steps from Galata Tower.

Sessions accommodate solo visitors, couples, and small groups.

This is skill-building, not sightseeing. You'll engage directly with a traditional art form and create something tangible in the process.
