From 1850s Kayseri Yahyalı Fragment on Linen

-Yahyali rugs are one of the most significant designs in the oriental rug world. Most Yahyali oriental rugs, both antique and contemporary, have a symmetrical main ornamental design of a hexagon or diamond medallion, typically with pendants (sometimes in the form of hanging lamps). It's possible to have a single, double, or triple hexagon. This piece is 160 to 170 years old with natural dyes and sewn into the linen to preserve the remaining parts of this antique beauty.

Canvas Size: 4'2'' x 3'10'' (127 cm x 116 cm)
Fragment Size: 3'2'' x 3'4''(96 cm x 101 cm)
Vintage from the 18th century

-The climate of Persia is not ideal for the preservation of textiles and until recently no effort has been made to preserve rugs as a historical artifact. Also, huge gaps in the historical record of Anatolia complicate this problem. The relatively few surviving rugs that predate the eighteenth century are very fragmental because older rugs deteriorated gradually from being buried beneath the layers of votive rugs and kilims that have typically carpeted the older mosques of Anatolia and the Middle East.

In Central and West Asia, amulets (often in the form of triangular packages containing a sacred verse) were traditionally attached to the clothing of babies and young children to give them protection from forces such as the evil eye. The carpet expert Jon Thompson explains that such an amulet woven into a rug is not a theme: it actually is an amulet, conferring protection by its presence. In his words, "the device in the rug has materiality, it generates a field of force able to interact with other unseen forces and is not merely an intellectual abstraction.

Southern Turkey town Mut is a small province of Mersin city. Throughout history, Central Asian Turkmen tribes have been settled into the mountainous region and continue to perform their traditions into rug making. Motifs from Southern Turkey is a representation of the cultural legacy of the Turkmen tribal community living in Turkey.

Mohair is a fabric or yarn made from the hair of the Angora goat. Those have been very famous around Eastern Turkey and used as a blanket for shepherds or people who had to stay outside during cold nights of Eastern Anatolia where mountains are vast. An empty field with only a medallion is one characteristic design use in the pile rugs from the Siirt region of Turkey, their specific colors of brown and darker shades of brown is specific to this region (Eastern Anatolian part of Turkey). The comb (Tarak) pattern within the star in the center is another example of using the Anatolian motif in the rug and represents and shows wishes to have luck. The pile rugs are usually used as shepherd beds and known for their soft tissues to bring comfort.

A kaftan or caftan (/ˈkæftæn/; Persian: خفتان‎ khaftān) is a variant of the robe or tunic, and has been worn in a number of cultures around the world for thousands of years and is of Asiatic origin. In Russian usage, kaftan instead refers to a style of men's long suit with tight sleeves. Used by many Middle Eastern ethnic groups, the kaftan is ancient Mesopotamian (modern day Iraq) in origin. It may be made of wool, cashmere, silk, or cotton, and may be worn with a sash. Popular during the time of the Ottoman Empire, detailed and elaborately designed garments were given to ambassadors and other important guests at the Topkapi Palace.

Turkish rugs vary, not only with their techniques but even withing techniques they have differences of application and purposes. Tulu rugs have been one of the examples of how the Turkish nomadic lifestyle is applied to knotting art. With long piles, Tulus nomadic Turkish people found their comfort in using them as bedding wherever they go, from up to the mountains to the near a river. Konya Tülüs is one sign of this style of rugs. Due to the high nomadic people population in the area and longer, thicker wool from sheep the city has been famous for their fluffy, various, beautiful Tulu long piles. This unique piece which is about 50 years old is surely a great example of the genre and stands out with its extreme and rare natural dyes with its soft structure.

On the far west tip of the Cilician plain, south-west of Adana and close to the Mediterranean Sea, the town of Silifke was founded in the third century BC by the Alexandran general Seleucus Nicator, who established the Seleucid dynasty that ruled Syria. Silifke is also known as the place where Emperor Frederick Barbarossa met his demise during the Third Crusade, by falling off his horse into the river! Kilims made in this region are normally small or medium in size. Yastiks and çuval are also woven in çiçim (jijim also cicim), zili, and weft-wrapping techniques. This small cicim from Adana where the Ta**us row mountains. Dyed with deep cochineal red. This nomadic jijim is aged in the chest and probably gifted as a dowry piece to a bride in Anatolia, which is also a tradition for those people before marriage.

Not so an Islamic textile. In Islamic art, some figurative forms, human and animal, are permitted, but in many cases it is considered disrespectful to walk over them, thus precluding their use in knotted rugs and kilims. For the tribal weavers, however, connections with their natural environment, with their animals, and with their family groups are very strong and deeply rooted and will override religious taboo, so that recognizable objects are depicted in their rugs, but these will never be seen to form part of a complete, pseudo-realistic picture. Art for art's sake is a concept alien to Islam, but kilims are practical as well as decorative, so they are of a high order within the definition of Islamic art.

The main motif in this Bahcecik (Kayseri) central Anatolian rug is the wolf mouths centered inside the triple medallion design it usually represents the power and acts as a protection of their sheep, and goats from the beasts of Anatolia.
