Maai | A Pause at the Door

Light reveals the restaurant’s name as guests approach. Just outside, a place for umbrellas and an ashtray welcomes a brief pause on the way in or out. Even arriving has its own rhythm.

Maai | Space Around the Seat

The timber counter’s thickness and corners become clearer once seated. The washroom sits beyond a turn, keeping the dining area quiet. Its restrained materials and lighting carry that atmosphere beyond the seat.

Maai | At the Counter

The precise cuts of kappo cuisine inspired the layered ceiling above the counter. Focused light reveals each edge, drawing the eye inward before it returns to the seats below.
The rhythm of each slice stays in the space, quiet and clear.

Maai | A Pause Before the TurnThe recessed entrance...

Maai | A Pause Before the Turn

The recessed entrance, carved forms and stone underfoot invite guests to slow down. Light leads the eye toward the end of the passage before the counter comes into view.
A quiet moment before taking a seat.

Maai | From the Street Inward

A reserved dining experience begins before taking a seat.
The entrance is set back from the street, creating a brief pause between outside and in. As guests step through, the pace of the street recedes and their attention turns toward the meal ahead.
Maai is about distance and timing. This is where the experience begins.

Rather than striving for formal perfection, we prioritize a space’s ability to respond naturally to life over time. Our goal is for inhabitants to feel a sense of ease and belonging in the ebb and flow of daily rituals—ensuring that the house doesn‘t just contain life, but truly becomes a part of it.
