邀請您於 7 月 4 日下午4點,參與策展人導覽系列活動「Take a dip in the River」,共同見證在日常與預示之間,誕生於動盪的未來殘影。

Last Saturday marked the opening of artist Yi-Shuan Lee’s first solo exhibition “On a Clear Day, You can See Forever” at RIVER ART GALLERY. With the artist present, the gallery welcomed an incredible gathering of collectors, curators, artists, and friends, creating an evening filled with conversation, connection, and shared excitement. We look forward to welcoming more visitors throughout the exhibition.

We warmly invite you to join the curator guided tour “Take a dip in the River” at 4 PM on July 4, witness the birth of a turbulent future afterimage, hovering between the everyday and premonition.

大河美術很榮幸舉辦李奕諠於本藝廊的首次個展。展覽包含藝術家近期的一系列繪畫作品,進一步探討了寓言性的感知、重新展開的反思,以及形塑當代存在狀態中的情感結構。

展名借用了近乎過度浪漫主義的語言;然而,在藝術家的創作框架中,這句話轉化為某種更為內化的事物:一種暫時性的心理信念,彷彿只要天空仍然晴朗,人們便得以繼續相信某種共同秩序、溫柔或連貫性的可能。李奕諠的創作傳達出幽默從不是逃避的意志,更像是一種不停運作的生存機制。畫面中可辨識的圖像不再僅僅作為描繪,而是一則未完成的寓言——透過身體與日常相遇而累積出的預示感,或可被描述為一道「未來殘影(future afterimage)」,停留在歷史轉折的臨界之處。

River Art Gallery is excited to present Yi-Shuan Lee’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Bringing together a recent body of paintings, the exhibition explores allegorical perception, renewed reflection, and the affective architectures that shape contemporary existence.

The exhibition title borrows the language of near-excessive romanticism, yet within Lee’s framework the phrase becomes something markedly more interior: a temporary psychological conviction, as though the persistence of clear skies might still allow one to believe in the possibility of communal order, tenderness, or coherence. Humour, in Lee’s work, is never escapist; it operates instead as a mechanism of survival. The recognisable imagery within his paintings no longer functions simply as depiction, but as unfinished allegory, a premonitory response accumulated through the body’s encounter with the everyday, or what might be described as a “future afterimage” lingering at the threshold of historical transition.

臺灣策展人許云榳出生於1995年,2018年畢業於國立臺南藝術大學藝術史學系後,自2021年起為大河美術專任策展人,參與至今已策劃多達21檔以上的展覽。2024年執行「Take a dip in the RIVER」策展人導覽系列,透過結合藝術家創作脈絡、策展邏輯、空間與燈光技術等深度導覽,推廣藝廊亦可成為教育與感知交流的平台。

策展核心圍繞著「Curator」的詞源——照料與守護。對她而言,即使觀看方式與藝術語境不斷變動,藝術仍是深植於身體的感知本能;觀看是與生俱來的,而展覽與博物館則是激活的關鍵場域。長期關注集體意識、當代情緒結構與後數位時代的她,策展實踐透過視覺形式與媒材,以及觀看心理間的交互作用,在宏觀與微觀之間持續校準:既關注全球化與科技加速下的集體狀態,也凝視微小而私密的個體經驗,探索兩者如何映照出更龐大的時代結構。

Taiwanese curator Olivia Hsu (b. 1995) graduated from the Department of Art History at TNNUA in 2018. Since 2021, she has served as Curator at RIVER ART GALLERY, curating and contributing to over 21 exhibitions to date. In 2024, she initiated "Take a Dip in the RIVER," a curator guided tour series that offers in-depth engagement with artists’ practices, curatorial works, spatial design, and lighting, positioning the gallery as a platform for learning, sensory experience, and exchange.

Hsu’s curatorial practice is grounded in the etymological meaning of “curator”: one who cares for and safeguards. For Hsu, even as modes of viewing and artistic contexts continue to shift, art remains a perceptual instinct rooted in the body; the impulse to look is innate, while exhibitions and art spaces serve as critical sites of activation. With a sustained interest in collective consciousness, contemporary emotional structures, and the post-digital condition, her practice unfolds through the interplay of visual form, materiality, spatial experience, and the psychology of viewing. Moving between the macro and the micro, she attends to the collective conditions shaped by globalization and technological acceleration. At the same time, she turns toward the intimate textures of individual experience, exploring how each reflects the larger structures of the present.

出生於 1995 年的加拿大籍臺裔藝術家李奕諠,長期游移於亞洲與北美之間。他的創作實踐發展出一種難以被單一風格歸類的感知結構——既不落入懷舊式自傳的範疇,也拒絕純粹對當代情境直接反映。在一個日益重複、身份框架重疊與可見文化加速形塑的時代中,藝術家的繪畫維持著一種罕見的形式與情感上的真誠。既與超現實主義保持距離,也不同於近年被廣泛提及的「夢核(dreamcore)」式情感語言。與其說這是一種風格立場,不如說更趨近一種懸置於本能、形式與預感之間的具象感知。這些圖像來自一種朝向現實本身的動物性直覺,一種對氛圍與時代當下,無意識的敏銳反射。

Born in 1995, Taiwanese-Canadian artist Yi-Shuan Lee has moved between Asia and North America for much of his life. His practice has developed through a perceptual structure resistant to singular stylistic classification. His work exists outside the terrain of nostalgic autobiography, yet equally resists functioning as either direct observation or reflection of the contemporary condition. In a cultural moment increasingly shaped by repetition, identity consensus, and accelerated visibility, Lee’s paintings maintain a rare sense of formal and emotional sincerity. His work maintains a distance from Surrealism while remaining distinct from the dreamlike affective language commonly associated with “dreamcore.” More than a stylistic position, Lee’s paintings approach a mode of representation suspended between instinct, form, and premonition. These images from an animalistic intuition toward reality itself, an embodied sensitivity to atmosphere and the unconscious tensions of the present moment.

“Hundred Quilts: No Knots Without Weight” will conclude this Saturday, we are grategul for all the guests who visited. This exhibition centers on the corporeal imagery of the patchwork quilt. Repetitive gestures of weaving, inscribing, layering, and stitching through fiber-based practices run throughout the exhibition, accumulating weight and transforming into works that can be physically and emotionally felt.

Stitching becomes a practice that resists silence—soft yet capable of bearing weight—embodying a quiet determination against erasure. RIVER ART GALLERY warmly welcomes your visit and experience it in person while it is on view.

About the work|Love is the thread that binds us

Angie Pai的《Metaphysical Devotion》以舊衣布料縫合家務勞動、遷徙經驗與代際傳承,使磨損、裂口與鬆線成為時間與照護的見證。自2019年開始創作,直至2024年,她在與Lindy Lee於澳洲Hinterlands的駐村中往復將其完成。這件作品詮釋了百納被的概念本身,將祖父母的保暖衣物碎布、父親曾使用的竹枕套,以及駐村期間Lindy Lee贈送的絲綢等布料縫合,保留著多年日常使用中累積的身體痕跡。

照護之情透過反覆的縫製、修補與保存行為得以實踐。而紡織品的便攜性促成遷徙,這件作品如靜默的伴侶般與藝術家穿梭於城市與國家之間。旨在致敬靜默的勞動奉獻,一針一線維繫著跨越世代的時光印記與延續的證據。

In Angie Pai’s “Metaphysical Devotion”, she stitches together domestic labor, experiences of migration, and intergenerational legacies applying used fabric, transforming wear, tears, and loose threads into testimonies of time and care. She began working on this piece in 2019, later returned to it in 2024 during her residency with Lindy Lee in the Hinterlands, Australia. It embodies the concept of patchwork, resembling cotton fragments of warming garments kept from her grandparents, bamboo pillowcases used by her father, and silk gifted by Lindy Lee during the residency—all while preserving the traces of daily use accumulated over the years.

Care is enacted through repeated acts of stitching, mending, and preservation. The portability of textiles facilitates movement, and the work travels with the artist across cities and countries like a silent companion. It pays tribute to quiet acts of labor and devotion—each stitch sustaining traces of time across generations, and bearing witness to their continuation.

Lili Lee的《Yellow Persona》呼應展覽主題,表現碎片化的情感與經驗如何漸漸聚集、連結並成型。在一片鮮黃中,流動的點、線、面散落交織著,構成看似分散卻又相互支撐的結構。這些元素是幾經匱乏、斷裂、照護與遷移的經驗和感受,隨著時間凝結,匯聚在中央的圓形面具。面具並非是一張固定的面孔,而是在生活、記憶和他人的連結之中堆疊塑型的人格。情感穿越身體,留下痕跡,耀眼的像是高溫蒸烤過所留下的熱氣,藝術家的自我在反覆流動中一一顯影成形。

“Yellow Persona” by Lili Lee resonates with the exhibition’s framework, exploring how fragmented emotions and experiences gradually gather, connect, and take shape. Set against an expanse of vivid yellow, scattered points, lines, and planes flow and interweave, forming a structure that may appear dispersed at first, yet quietly holds itself together through mutual support. These elements echo experiences of lack, rupture, care, and migration, as they slowly condense and converge into the mask at the center. This mask is not a fixed face, but a persona shaped by lived experience, memory, and the sensations that accrue through relationships with others. Emotion moves through the body, leaving traces behind, like the lingering heat of something intensely felt. Through the continuous movement and accumulation of experience, the artist’s sense of self emerges, becoming visible as these traces take form.

《Hundred Quilts: No Knots Without Weight》上週六的「Take a dip in the River:策展人導覽活動」圓滿落幕,謝謝各位貴賓蒞臨。本次展覽試圖突破百衲被的慣有論述,除了以創作中的纖維以及布料所承載的重量為基底,特別將接縫處的「結」一再點出,彰顯創作實踐的勞動與情緒代謝,以及堅韌的連結與張力,在世代間牽起歸屬,進一步揭示拉扯的複雜議題。

展覽將持續展出至 5 月 16 日,RIVER ART GALLERY 邀請您到現場觀展,在縫合與裂縫之間,辨識痕跡,重織連結的可能。

The curator guided tour “Take a dip in the River” of “Hundred Quilts: No Knots Without Weight” concluded successfully last Saturday. Thank you to all our guests for joining us.
This exhibition seeks to move beyond conventional narratives of the patchwork quilt. Grounded in the fibers and the weight carried by textiles, it foregrounds the “knots” at points of stitching, highlighting the labor and emotional metabolism embedded in artistic practice, as well as the resilient bonds and tensions they hold. These elements draw together a sense of belonging across generations while revealing the complexities of entanglement.

The exhibition runs through May 16. RIVER ART GALLERY invites you to visit, to trace these marks between mending and rupture, and to reweave the possibility of connection.

Allan Villavicencio 的作品討論了身體與地景間的關係。他將繪畫視為新陳代謝的變動過程,《The blue knot》中,大大小小的色塊呈現扭曲、分裂、延伸等具有生命力的有機形狀,如同交界處的窗,也像是帶有強烈張力的「結」,維繫、連結並緊緊纏繞著身體內外的風景。

《The outside is the inside》運用皮膚與新陳代謝的隱喻,將藝術家所見的窗景加以形式化,以多重的綠色調建構層次,交疊出連接著內在與外在的多重窗口。藝術家試圖捕捉在兩個世界間隙裡,那近乎細微、不可察覺的蛻變瞬間,同時使自我在創作中得以不斷重生。

Allan Villavicencio conceives his work as a relationship between body and landscape. He thinks of the pictorial process as metabolism in constant transformation. In “The blue knot”, patches of color—varying in scale—take on organic forms that twist, split, and extend with a sense of vitality. They read as windows opening onto thresholds, as well as “knots” charged with tension—binding and entwining the body’s inner and outer terrains.

“The outside is the inside” draws on the metaphors of skin and metabolism to ftranslates the artist’s perception of a window view into form. Through layered shades of green, the work constructs depth and overlap, unfolding multiple windows that connect the interior and the exterior. The artist seeks to capture those imperceptible moments of metamorphosis that occur within the interstices between two worlds, while allowing the self to continually regenerate through the act of creation.
