名稱來自於挪威極地探險家南森的著作『 在北霧中 』(In Northern Mists).

北霧設計的logo，是地球已知的動物中，遷徙路線最長的.
牠每年從北極的繁殖區飛往南極，然後再飛返北極，來回各19,000公里的遷徙旅程讓牠一年可以遇見兩個夏天，並成為與太陽相處最久的動物.

北極燕鷗平均一生飛行的路線＝地球往返月球一次.（約760,000公里）
