Wood carries memory.

Of landscapes, of gestures, of communities built around making.

Across the Pemba and Kizimkazi collections, Kukua continues to explore how traditional woodworking techniques can evolve into contemporary forms while remaining deeply rooted in Tanzanian craftsmanship.

Through long-term collaborations with local artisans and carpenter collectives, these pieces celebrate not only material and technique, but also the cultural knowledge passed from one generation to the next.

The Pemba Series begins with a simple gesture repeated for generations.

On Zanzibar, traditional wooden furniture has long been crafted using locally sourced Mziwa wood, shaped entirely by hand without chemical treatments or industrial transformation. What remains is the essence of the material itself โ€” honest, durable, and deeply connected to place.

Since 2021, Kukua has been collaborating with the Jisamwe Collective in Stone Town to expand this traditional language into a contemporary furniture collection for hospitality and private interiors. Through this ongoing exchange, craftsmanship becomes not only a practice of making, but also a source of livelihood and continuity for the artisans behind each piece.

Behind every surface is the work of skilled hands, patient processes, and years of inherited knowledge.

The Kizimkazi collection was developed in collaboration with Tanzanian carpenters across different regions, creating outdoor furniture designed specifically for the local hospitality sector. Throughout this journey, Kukua worked closely with artisan groups such as the Bin Ali Collective, whose craftsmanship and dedication played an essential role in shaping the identity of the collection.

Each detail reflects a dialogue between material, function, and human experience โ€” where woodworking becomes both a contemporary design practice and a continuation of local tradition.

More than a workshop, Glass Bridge is a gesture of exchange.

Connecting Murano Masters Andrea Zilio and Luigi Varagnolo with Arushaโ€™s workshop through glassmaking traditions, the project highlights the power of craftsmanship as a tool for education, accessibility, and cultural dialogue.

Working entirely through collaboration and shared knowledge, the initiative brought together artisans, makers, and communities in a process where creativity became a bridge between territories and experiences.

Within the heat of the furnace, collaboration takes shape.
At the Workshop, recycled glass becomes a medium for learning, transformation, and empowerment. Glass Bridge reflects Kukuaโ€™s belief that design can create meaningful connections between cultures while supporting long-term creative development within local communities.

By sharing tools, techniques, and knowledge, the project establishes foundations for future glass production in Tanzania while celebrating the extraordinary skill of the artisans involved.

Glass Bridge was born from a desire to create dialogue through craftsmanship.

Developed by Kukua in collaboration with the Shanga Workshop in Arusha, the project brought together Murano master glassblowers and Tanzanian artisans working with recycled glass in an intensive exchange of techniques, materials, and ideas.

Led by Emmanuel Babled alongside Murano masters Andrea Zilio and Luigi Varagnolo, the workshop became a shared space for experimentation โ€” where traditional Venetian glassmaking encountered local practices rooted in sustainability and inclusion.

Textiles that carry the gesture of the hand into everyday spaces.

Through the Kendwa Series, Kukua explores batik not only as a decorative technique, but as a living artisanal practice rooted in patience, rhythm, and material knowledge.

Each piece reflects a collaborative process between artisans, designers, and makers โ€” where traditional textile techniques are reinterpreted for contemporary interiors while preserving the human stories embedded within every layer of colour.
