From one chair, a whole collection.

From a traditional chair to a complete collection.
What started with a simple wooden chair became the Pemba Series.

Made from locally sourced materials and rooted in generations of craftsmanship, each piece carries a little of the place it comes from.

What began as a small adjustment to their original chair gradually became something much bigger: a complete collection of furniture designed for restaurants, hospitality spaces, resorts, and private homes.

This is the Pemba Series.

A tradition carried by hands.

Before it becomes a design, it is a skill.

Since 2021, we have been collaborating with Jisamwe, an artisan collective based in Stone Town, supported by our local manager Denis Bandoma.
The Pemba Series is not only about objects.

It is about knowledge, collaboration and the value of keeping craftsmanship alive.

And today, the collection is the main source of income for the Jisamwe Collective — making it a symbol of their livelihood as much as it is of Zanzibar’s craft tradition.

The signature wooden chair is one of them — simple, functional and made entirely from locally sourced materials, without transformation or chemicals.

At Kukua, we believe contemporary design can begin by looking closely at what is already there — the materials, the knowledge and the traditions of a place.

This is where the Pemba Series began.

From a home workshop in Dar es Salaam to the interiors of Kukua.

The Kendwa Series is a collaboration between artisans, designers, and makers, beginning with Eazy’s hand-applied batik patterns and layered dyes, and continuing with Minja’s careful tailoring in Zanzibar.

Printed on heavy natural canvas and filled with natural kapok cotton, each cushion brings together traditional knowledge, contemporary design, and the unmistakable gesture of the human hand.
Made slowly. Made together. Made to last.

The Kendwa Series meets the Beach Club Chair.

Crafted from teak wood and paired with a hand-finished Kendwa batik canvas cushion, the Beach Club Chair Single brings together two expressions of Kukua’s artisanal approach, natural materials and textiles shaped by the hand.

The cushions are filled with natural kapok cotton (sufi), creating breathable, comfortable seating made for slow moments by the sea, the pool, or wherever you choose to unwind.

Designed as part of the Kizimkazi collection, the Beach Club Chair Single measures 120 × 80 × 65 cm and weighs 10 kg.

Personalise your Kukua pieces with textiles that reflect your space, your style, and the stories you want to bring into it.

Wax, dye, repetition, and time.

The Kendwa Series explores batik as a living artisanal practice — where each layer of colour reveals a pattern, and each pattern carries the trace of the hand.

Created in collaboration with artisan Eazy in Dar es Salaam, the textiles are printed onto heavy natural canvas before becoming cushions for Kukua’s Kizimkazi and Pemba collections, sewn by tailor Minja in Zanzibar.
