"Palm Leaves Storm" This painting was inspired by looking out a window, while I was at the beach, in a torrential downpour. I could see a Sago palm outside, and during that rainstorm, I could see flashes of green. This painting depicts those flashes of green I was seeing through the driving rain.

"Night Terror" - 6" x 8" Acrylic on Wood Canvas - This work is inspired by the Huey Lewis & The News song, "Walking on a Thin Line." The lyrics are, "Sometimes in my bed at night, I curse the dark and I pray for the light. And sometimes, the light's no consolation." Though the song is really about veterans returning from service, to me, it applies to the difficulty of sleeping when something troubling is going on in your life. When I wake up in the middle of the night, in my mind, I always joke that 3:00 am is never a good time to make decisions. Though there is not a lot of color at night, this painting is really me attempting to capture the chaos in my mind when I wake up in the middle of the night.

"The Canvas Can Do Miracles" – Inspiration for this painting came from listening to the Christopher Cross song, “Sailing.” Stealing the lines from the song, “Well, it’s not far down to paradise, at least it’s not for me. And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility. Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me.” These lyrics definitely speak to the feeling I get from painting. For me, painting is like sailing; that is where I find peace and tranquility. This song is so soothing and calming, and I find that same feeling when I’m painting.

This painting is related to the song, "Give Me Just a Little More Time," by General Johnson and the Chairman of the Board. This song also inspired one of my other paintings, Conch Shell. When I was painting the Conch Shell, I looked down at the glass palette that I mixed my colors on, and I liked the colors I was mixing. I really liked the way the colors just seemed to blend together. So I decided to just paint my palette, resulting in "Conch Palette." Please visit my Etsy shop!

I painted this after listening to the "Tears of a Clown" song, by Smokey Robinson. In this song, one of the verses is, "Just like Pagliacci did, I try to keep my sadness hid, smiling in the public eye, but in my lonely room I cry, the tears of a clown, when there's no one around." In this song, Pagliacci (Italian for "clown") is a reference to an opera. In the opera, the performance is imitating real life. The main character, Pagliacci, ends up killing his wife and himself during the opera. The irony is to have such a tragic event for a person playing a clown in the opera. The Joker, as a character, also came from suffering. Typically people think of clowns in a happy way. For some reason, when I think of clowns, it really gives me a sad feeling. In this painting, I decided not to do a full-face picture because I was trying to make him sad, rather than scary. Please visit my Etsy Shop!

Born and raised in North Carolina, one of the times I love is fall. This is one of many paintings I have done that is inspired by the lyrics of the Porchlight Apothecary song, "Good to Be in Carolina Again." This painting reflects the feeling I get in the fall in the Carolinas. Always such good memories!

"The Mask" – This work was influenced by the song, “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town,” by Pearl Jam. I think this song has some of the greatest lyrics about aging. In particular, it makes me think of all the people affected by Dementia and Alzheimer’s. A woman I used to work with had a mother-in-law with Alzheimer's. Her mother-in-law told her that sometimes there was a strange lady in the mirror. This painting represents the idea of not recognizing your own image. I find this concept extremely troubling, and was trying to relay that feeling in this painting.

“Blue Pearl” I always like the way the sun reflects off trees and the water and so many things. I used iridescent paint to give these colors a pearlescent appearance.

Meet the Artist - Larry Oxford

Though I have no formal training, I originally took up art in the form of sculpting. After creating a line of home accessories and collectible Christmas figurines, “life” took me away from art for the next 16 years. In 2014, I tried painting on canvas and soon realized I absolutely loved it! Currently, my favorite technique is using palette knives with acrylic paint. I am still learning to mix colors, as well as, experimenting with different styles. As I progress, my painting has been trending towards abstract and impressionistic, in lieu of realistic. A good deal of my inspiration comes from two things I love, travel and golf!

“It May Be Art” is meant to convey the nebulous definition of art. Art may be deemed great based on perceived technical skill, or simply the feeling it conveys to the viewer. For me, painting is a relaxing escape. So, is it art? The best part is, you get to decide! Please click on your favorite paintings to see what inspired them!

All paintings are acrylic paint on canvas using brush or palette knife. Paintings are on display at Twigg & Co., Aberdeen, NC.
