Been seeing these little wooden surfboards you can surf with your fingers in the wind, so I figured weā€™d try making our own. šŸ„

Brooklyn drew the outline, I gave everyone a sanding lesson, and the girls and Jamie took their turns. Then came the important partā€”seeing if they actually worked. šŸ˜‚

Pretty good way to spend some time together in the shop.

This big barn door needed one little fix.

The floor guide was sitting too low to engage the door, so Eric made a small block from the same wood to raise it. Watch the difference when he tests it.

Even after years of building, rushing a step can still come back to get you.

I was installing this little sliding door on a custom home bar and skipped something I normally do when driving into hardwood: pre-drilling.

The fastener bound up and the head snapped off.

A pilot hole and a little wax on the threads take seconds. Trying to remove the broken fastener afterward? Not so much. šŸ˜‚

The good news: problem solved, fastener replaced, and the mini barn door worked exactly as planned.

Thatā€™s custom work sometimes ā€” solve the little problems so the finished piece looks like there never was one.

Sometimes you just need an extra set of hands.

I was installing this barn door and needed to make a few small adjustments to get everything lined up. This little Winbag air wedge lets me lift it a little at a time until I have it right where I need it.

Itā€™s one of those simple tools I end up reaching for more than youā€™d think.

I found this vintage phone sign at a flea market and couldnā€™t leave it there.

I love old pieces that canā€™t just be duplicated, and I happened to need a charging station, so I built a wood frame around the sign and added a power strip with USB and USB-C charging.

I also designed it so I didnā€™t have to permanently alter the original sign.

Thereā€™s even a quick French-cleat mounting trick in the video for anyone who sticks around. šŸ˜‚

The flea market actually had two of these signs.

I kept one for us, and the second charging station is available for $125.

Weā€™re a competitive family, so once I built a pumpkin launcher, obviously we had to see how far we could send one. šŸ˜‚šŸŽƒ

We pulled out the measuring wheel, measured the launches, compared distancesā€¦ and then started wondering what ELSE we could put in it.

This came together so quick!

We used simple wood slices, paint, and a RYOBI hot glue gun to make a few fall decorations for our charcuterie board.

The girls and I each have our own glue gun, and naturally we personalized the glue guns themselves with paint and googly eyes so nobody could claim somebody elseā€™s. šŸ˜‚

For the wood slices, we kept it simple ā€” mostly paint with a few natural details. I made one reversible too: pumpkin on one side for the more civilized crowd šŸŽƒ and Halloween on the other.

The challenge wasnā€™t just building a custom bar.

It was making it look like it had always belonged with the clientā€™s existing acacia live-edge table.

We found East Indian walnut ā€” a completely different species, but with warm salmon and brown tones that worked beautifully with the acacia.

Then came the finish. Since we didnā€™t know exactly what had been used on the original table, I had to bring out the color in the walnut without adding too much amber or changing the tone.

Natural stain + water-based polyurethane ended up being the combination.

Thatā€™s one of my favorite parts of custom work: the answer usually isnā€™t just ā€œbuild the thing.ā€ Itā€™s figuring out how to make the new piece belong in the space.

I canā€™t go buy another one of these. This one is one of one.

I found this lamp at Deal Dayz here in Cartersville. It was inexpensive and I thought it was beautiful, but it was missing the entire base.

Easy enough.

I had a five-inch scrap piece of cedar in the shop, cut it round on the bandsaw, drilled it and made a new base.

Then while I was sanding, I noticed one of the dark spots wasnā€™t changing. I flicked it with my finger and realized it was metal - old sh***un pellets were buried in the tree.

As a woodworker, finding metal in wood usually isnā€™t something you celebrate. It can dull or damage a blade, and most people would probably remove it.

I left it.

Itā€™s part of the treeā€™s story.

Thatā€™s one of my favorite things about working with old, reclaimed or unusual material. Sometimes you arenā€™t just making something new. Youā€™re preserving part of what was already there.

Cheap lamp. Scrap cedar. Pretty cool piece of history.
