A mistake that makes you humble is better than an achievement that makes you arrogant… Building your own designs means making mistakes that end up being very costly, but that's all part of the learning curve, right? Initially I start my designs by cutting each template by hand, because I'm a fan of the old-school approach. This takes a lot of time and effort that can end in failure or just plain ugly. On top of that is wasted resources, material, time and funding - but that's just the price you pay for being a perfectionist. Regardless, pushing through these repeat failures can create a success that leads to that final sense of accomplishment. From there it grows to the purchase of custom cutting dies and additional equipment for assembly. Going through this process to sell a premium product is humbling to say the least.

Succes is rarely sudden, it’s usually silent, slow, and earned! A trip to Italy was a welcomed trip that gave us great food, art, places and people. During my trip, I took the time and opportunity to meet the leather makers in Italy and shared many stories and experiences. Walking through the cobblestone streets of Rome- you notice many stores with similar looking bags and shops they share the same look. I was curious to talk to the makers in these stores about their leather products and I received the same answer “They are made in Tuscany”. However, I did meet with true leather artisans and I asked them questions about these stores. With a smile, they could tell I was a leather maker. They explained that like in the USA, many shops have shipped the leather or production out of the country so they could make the bags cheaper. It’s funny that you travel across the world and find similar issues. Regardless, through all this still exists the companies that have the passion for making products in their own country. In conversation, I found that some bag makers had changed their process and are using cheaper zinc plated hardware rather than the robust solid brass or stainless steel. All efforts to stay alive in an industry where margins can be tight. However, the leather was beautiful and the craftsmanship was amazing as the talent of the Italian artisans are top notch. Sharing samples and images of our products with the makers, they were amazed by the integrity, thickness and quality of an American product. Gathering so much inspiration from Italy and makers- they gave me the same advice- don’t change what you’re doing! Keep your products robust, use the best materials at your disposal, and continue making with the love and pride of where you live!

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change. Many years ago I carried the weight of a profession that was immense and challenging beyond words. As a young professional, I still desired the work of my hands that brought me peace with what I could create with my hands rather than the words I spoke or the decisions I made. During this difficult time I found harmony by strolling through a local market in NY where I met the Amish that had driven hours to sell their goods. Intrigued by their leather goods, I asked if I could see the process where they made them. Needless to say the Amish are a very tight community that does not commonly invite the outsiders into their homes. After months of many conversations and persistence they allowed me to enter and work in their saddle shop. No phones were allowed from the outside world- underneath side eyes and conversations with a strong German dialect- this kept me guessing what they thought of me and what my purpose was. In that shed of gas lamps, no electricity and disconnected from the outside world, I fell in love with the heritage of old tools, techniques and sewing machines. Each weekend I drove hours away from home, job and family for this passion. Every time I drove down the old gravel road to their shop, I started becoming a regular. In their world, time stood still for me. I didn’t find the modern distractions, but instead found laughter, enjoyment and a purpose for my curiosity and talent. Being that I learned so much from them about tooling, processes and equipment, I started to design and make products that were outside their norm. They were intrigued by my creativity and loved my creations. Unfortunately, after a long realtonship, healing and inner peace I moved away from NY. I will never forget the last day leaving them as it was full of handshakes, hugs, some crying, and always an arm full of baked goods. Seeing them wave goodbye replaced the once curious looks and stern faces from an outsider. I will cherish those moments forever and like I stated in the beginning, life does not get better by chance it gets better by change. Therefore, with the holidays behind us, orders shipped and the shop cleaned. I am packing my bags embarking on a similar journey far, far away to learn more old world techniques by exposing myself to an older culture and techniques of leatherwork to bring back new designs, ideas and stories that inspire our work and mission. Please follow our journey, page and what goes into our work. “Bent, Never Broken”. Beasley and Company 🇺🇸

I discovered my rhythm when I understood that even backward steps are part of the dance, embracing failures as part of the journey, a moment to learn, possibly gaining a new perspective or lens to view from. I remember years ago when I first started creating my craft and showing it for the first time publicly with my daughter. Very few sales and long hours created some self doubt and anxiety. A few people would pass by and would make fun of my creations and would laugh hastily. At that moment, my daughter looked at me and said “Dad why did you just stand there and let them make fun of your work”. In this defining moment I looked at my her and replied “I need to go back and create better products that people want, not what I think they want”. And that is just what I did- everywhere I went I observed what people wore, what they bought, and how it was advertised. At home, I created patterns on my living room floor, tested machinery, products, and processes to no return. Challenged to no end, I finally released my products to stores on a larger scale. Not to long ago, I visited a store that has sold thousands and thousands of my products I stood next to my daughter now 20 years old, and pointed out our amazing display and told her “Remember that day when we hardly sold any products and was criticized?” She looked at me and smiled. If anything I wanted to show her as young girl that stepping backward can be the energy that moves you forward! Love you Brie and for being part of the journey. “Bent, Never Broken” 🇺🇸

You can't deplete creativity. The more you utilize it, the more it grows. Today I stepped away from the machines and dedicated time to developing and designing. This process gives me a deeper appreciation for my roots, as I navigated challenging steps and iterated through tweaks and alterations until finalizing the product. “ Bent, Never Broken” 🇺🇸 Beasley
