A truly unique shopping experience inside a historic architectural delight, J.M. Alderson General Merchandise LLC (commonly known simply as Alderson's) was established by the Alderson family in 1887. The first building burned to the ground in 1930 and was replaced a half a block away by the current building, which was completed in 1932. our "new" building has been recognized as one of the most pristine examples of Art Deco store buildings still in existence. The fourth generation now manages the store and continues to make it the anchor attraction in the Alderson Historic District. The building's Art Deco architecture and fixtures - which were designed especially for Alderson's by renowned architect Walter Martens - make it a rare jewel in southern West Virginia. Today, the store is a throwback to the way department stores once were - complete with impressive front windows with ever-changing seasonal displays. You'll find elegant shop cases, tables, and alcoves featuring a wide selection of jewelry, clothing and accessories, as well as an eclectic mix of antiques, collectibles, gifts, books, home decor, Alderson and West Virginia-related items and more! You'll also be treated to old-fashioned customer service, because we know it's our customers who keep us going. This is a true must-see in West Virginia!

When I was growing up, Memorial Day in our area of West Virginia was about remembering all of our loved ones who had gone before us. It involved traditions of going to the gravesides of grandparents and other ancestors with flowers, as well as cleaning off the stones. And yes, I remember flags and such at the graves of those who who had died serving our country...as well as veterans who had passed. Local cemeteries when I was little were highly decorated with lovely flowers...often fresh...this time of year.
(I would even take a fistful of flowers I had picked myself.) And I felt a little sad for any graves that were not.
We didn't call it Decoration Day, but in my adult years, as those old traditions seemed to be drifting away, the cemeteries were more vacant, and many would say Memorial Day was only for those who had died serving our country...I found the book referenced in this article. And now I like to share something about it each year. I like how the writer of the article describes feeling when finding it, too.
I think the old Appalachian traditions for this holiday are lovely and would be nice to carry on. ❤️
(P.S. We don't have the book in the store at the moment. I need to get it in again. 🤗)

Decoration Day is a folk tradition practiced by generations of Appalachians dedicated to visiting cemeteries to clean and decorate graves.

Hope everyone has had a good and safe Memorial Day Weekend!
