A truly unique shopping experience inside a historic architectural delight, J.M. Alderson General Merchandise LLC (commonly known simply as Alderson's) was established by the Alderson family in 1887. The first building burned to the ground in 1930 and was replaced a half a block away by the current building, which was completed in 1932. our "new" building has been recognized as one of the most pristine examples of Art Deco store buildings still in existence. The fourth generation now manages the store and continues to make it the anchor attraction in the Alderson Historic District. The building's Art Deco architecture and fixtures - which were designed especially for Alderson's by renowned architect Walter Martens - make it a rare jewel in southern West Virginia. Today, the store is a throwback to the way department stores once were - complete with impressive front windows with ever-changing seasonal displays.
