Spring is the perfect time to take a fresh look at your home, not just how it looks, but how it feels to live in every day.

Spring has a way of making us look at our homes differently. The light changes. The air feels lighter. And suddenly, the spaces we’ve been living in all winter start to feel… a little heavy. The good news? You don’t need a full renovation to create a home that feels fresh, calm, and current. With...

Multigenerational Living Without Buying a New Home

You may have seen new housing developments promoting homes designed for multigenerational living, with private spaces for parents, adult children, or caregivers.
While those homes are appealing, many families already own homes that may be adapted to create similar living arrangements.

With thoughtful design, existing homes can sometimes accommodate:
• Private family suites
• Home additions
• ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units)
• Interior conversions for aging parents

Multigenerational living allows families to stay close while maintaining independence and dignity for everyone involved.
If you’re wondering whether your home could be adapted for a parent, adult child, or future aging-in-place needs, a consultation can help explore the possibilities.

Most people think aging in place means grab bars and ramps.
But the real safety starts with finishes.

✔ Matte flooring instead of glossy
✔ Slip-resistant bathroom tile
✔ Lever handles instead of k***s
✔ Touchless faucets for easier use
✔ Contrast between counters and cabinets

These details prevent falls, reduce strain, and make everyday living easier — without making your home look “institutional.”

Design should be beautiful AND smart.
If you’re remodeling, let’s talk about finish selections that support long-term comfort and safety.

Most homes were designed for a moment in time, not for the way our bodies, balance, or mobility may change over the years. In this video, Maria Nicholson, Certified Aging in Place Specialist and Licensed California General Contractor, explains why proactive home safety and accessibility planning is one of the most overlooked steps in protecting long-term independence. From subtle fall risks to layout and lighting challenges, Maria shares what she looks for during virtual and onsite consultations, and why planning early gives homeowners and families more options, not fewer. Federal Budget Wins for Aging Services and What It Means for Safe, Independent Living at Home

This week we’re highlighting an important development in federal appropriations that directly affects how we support older adults in our communities.

Congress has moved forward with full-year funding for key aging services, including nutrition programs, caregiver support, senior employment services, energy assistance, and even home modification initiatives.
(Source: NCOA — National Council on Aging)

Here’s why this matters for aging in place:
- Home modification programs allow seniors to remain safely in their homes longer by reducing fall risks and preventing avoidable hospitalizations.

-Supportive services—from caregiver respite to nutrition—help older adults stay active, connected, and independent.

-These appropriations reflect a growing national understanding that aging services are essential infrastructure, not optional add-ons.

And here’s what we want to highlight today:
Let’s recognize the organizations, advocates, and community leaders who continue to show Congress what older adults truly need to live safely at home. Their persistence is why these programs remain funded and protected.

This proves that when communities speak up with clarity and purpose, meaningful progress happens, and aging in place stays a national priority.

Every year, NCOA advocates in support of appropriations that help older Americans remain healthy and economically secure in their own homes and communities. Download NCOA's table of FY 2026 federal budget and appropriations for aging services programs of interest.

Your home may be silently affecting your health every single day.
Lighting impacts balance and fall risk. Bathroom layouts influence injury prevention. Narrow hallways restrict mobility. Poor ventilation affects breathing, sleep, and energy levels. These hidden design issues add stress to the body over time — especially for adults over 50 and families planning to age in place.

At Project Build Construction and Interiors, we help homeowners transform outdated spaces into safer, healthier, and more functional environments that support independence, comfort, and long-term wellbeing. From bathroom safety upgrades and accessibility improvements to smarter lighting layouts and universal design solutions, every detail is engineered to reduce risk and improve daily living.

If you’re planning to stay in your home long-term — or supporting aging parents — proactive remodeling protects both health and peace of mind.

Happy Friday everyone! Did you know that:
- according to AARP 90% of adults 65+ want to stay in their homes as they age
- 1 in 4 adults falls each year which is the leading cause of injury among seniors (CDC 2022) and every 11 seconds a senior falls.

Many homes weren’t designed for how we live today.
A lot of houses built in the 1970s–1990s were designed around very different assumptions:

– Smaller kitchens
– One main bathroom
– Limited lighting
– Narrow hallways and doorways
– Minimal storage

Families were different. Daily routines were different.
And longevity wasn’t part of the conversation yet.
Today, homes need to support:
✔ multi-generational living
✔ remote work
✔ long-term comfort and safety
✔ evolving mobility needs

Remodeling isn’t always about style.
Often, it’s about function catching up with life.
This is the lens we use when we evaluate homes not trends,
but how a space actually works for the people living in it.

Have you noticed parts of your home that just don’t work anymore?

For most of my career, aging in place was simply part of my work in construction.I understood homes — how they’re built, how they function, and how design choices affect everyday life. At the time, it was a profession. Then life made it personal.Becoming a caregiver changed everything. I saw how quickly independence can shift. How a home that once felt safe can suddenly feel overwhelming. And how families often wait until after something happens to think about accessibility and safety. That’s when aging in place stopped being just what I did — and became my purpose.Today, my mission is helping seniors and families create homes that support dignity, independence, and peace of mind through every stage of life — before crisis forces rushed decisions. If you’re planning ahead for yourself or caring for someone you love, thoughtful home design can make all the difference.🔗 Learn more at www.pbcgroupinc.com
