Vincent Bach was born Vincent Schrotenbach just outside of Vienna, Austria on March 24th, 1890. While Vincent started his early musical career on violin, he soon developed a love and passion for the cornet. Although he developed into an accomplished cornetist, Vincent’s father insisted he pursue a vocation in mechanical engineering. After gaining his degree in mechanical engineering and at the out

break of WW1, Vincent shortened his name to Vincent Bach and came to the United States where he played with the Boston Symphony. While on tour with the BSO, he damaged his mouthpiece and decided to design, make, and play his own mouthpiece. Colleagues asked to have mouthpieces for themselves, and in 1918 he started his business of making brass mouthpieces. Musicians frequently referred to his Bach trumpet as the “the ‘Stradivarius’ of a trumpet”, thus inspiring the brand name Bach Stradivarius. Bach sold his company to The H & A Selmer Company, a leading manufacturer and distributor of student, amateur, and professional instruments in 1961. True to Vincent’s vision, Conn-Selmer still follows the Bach tradition of excellence.

𝗔 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗹𝗲𝗿'𝘀 "𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲" 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲.

In May of 1969, the Philadelphia Orchestra, under the direction of Eugene Ormandy, recorded Mahler's First Symphony at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia for RCA Records. This was the first recording by a major orchestra to include the "Blumine" movement, which featured the orchestra's principal trumpet, the legendary Gilbert Johnson. The instrument he played is the Bach Stradivarius shown here.

The "Blumine" movement was removed by Mahler after the third performance of the work and went unperformed for more than 70 years, until Mahler biographer Donald Mitchell rediscovered it in 1966. The movement has since become a well-performed part of the orchestral repertoire, both as part of the symphony and as a stand-alone piece.

The trumpet that Gil Johnson performed the "Blumine" solo on is now in the possession of Roger Blackburn (Fourth Trumpet, Philadelphia Orchestra, 1974–2010). When Blackburn auditioned for the Philadelphia Orchestra in January of 1974 (replacing his teacher, Sam Krauss), music director Eugene Ormandy requested a solo of choice from the candidates. Blackburn performed Mahler's "Blumine" solo.

Johnson's lyrical performance helped restore the movement to the orchestral repertoire.

The instrument he used to do it was a Bach.

This was Jesper Busk Sørensen's reminder to the trombone studio of the Royal Academy of Music Aarhus (DJM) that the fundamentals always matter.

Berlin Philharmonic trombonist and graduate of the DJM, Sørensen returned to lead a two-day masterclass with the trombone studio where his career began.

Sean Jones, renowned trumpeter and leader in jazz education, brings his expertise to CSI National with sessions on “How to Start a Beginning Jazz Ensemble” and “How to Approach Teaching Improvisation,” plus a live concert performance on Tuesday, June 16.

Jones has served as president of the Jazz Education Network, is artistic director of NYO Jazz, and is Professor and Chair of Jazz Studies at the Peabody Conservatory.

The Cleveland Orchestra’s longest-serving Principal Trumpet, Sachs has premiered concertos written for him by John Williams and Wynton Marsalis, serves on the faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music, and helped shape the acoustic design of the new Bach 190 C trumpets.
